Summary: A raven arrives in Dorne.
The royal family were having breakfast when a raven arrived.
Doran opened the scroll. "The North has a new king."
Oberyn rolled his eyes. "One of Baratheon's brats, no doubt."
Doran shook his head. "There is a new king in Winterfell."
Alia's ears perked up at that.
Winterfell was about as North as you could get. Winterfell was the last major settlement before the Wall.
Alia herself had never been north of the Reach.
"Eddard Stark's oldest son Robb has been named King in the North," Doran explained.
"And the Lannister's are allowing this?" Oberyn asked.
"There have been no rumors of a plot to assassinate this new king. Perhaps you, Ellaria, and Alia could travel to Winterfell. Offer Dorne's support in case of an uprising."
Oberyn narrowed his eyes at his brother.
"Alia is of marrying age. She should have been married three years ago, Oberyn."
Oberyn jumped up from his chair. "I will not sell my daughter to the Wolves. She is not property to give away to the highest bidder."
Alia was Oberyn's favorite daughter (even though he would never admit to it out loud) and he would not force her into a marriage she didn't want. He wanted her to marry for love. He wanted someone to adore her as he did.
Alia stood up and put her hand on her father's arm. "Papa."
Oberyn sighed. "I am sorry, princess."
"Uncle Doran is right. Having allies in the North may prove important one day."
Oberyn hated that she was right. Since Oberyn had no legitimate heirs, he treated Alia as his heir. Teaching her about other cultures and diplomacy.
"Very well. We shall travel to Winterfell to meet this new King in the North."
Doran smiled. He knew his niece would see reason. "Excellent. I will ready the ships. You leave in a week."
Alia slipped into the hot water.
They would be leaving for Winterfell in the morning.
The bathing chamber was opulent, like most of Sunspear. Chandeliers hung from the ceiling and the walls were painted a bright green.
Her mind was the upcoming journey to Winterfell. She'd heard stories as a child that the North was a dark and dangerous place filled with monsters and wolves as big as bears. Alia sighed as she leaned back.
"Something wrong, little one?" Ellaria sat down on the floor next to the tub. "I know you do not like traveling by ship, but it is the quickest way."
"It's not that," Alia told her.
"Oh? Then what is wrong? You can tell me, little one."
Alia's whisper felt like a scream in a quiet church. "The Wolf King."
"What about him?"
"They say he rides on the back of a giant direwolf."
Ellaria giggled. "You should know better than to listen to the stories your cousins tell you. From what I've heard, this new King in the North is a good man. He is a just ruler and very kind. Like your father and uncle."
"What...what if he doesn't like me?"
Ellaria had to resist laughing at that.
Alia had never shown an interest in men, preferring the company of herself. Oberyn and Ellaria speculated that maybe she was interested in women or maybe she just wasn't interested in anyone. It didn't matter to them, because she was their daughter and they loved her.
It seemed deep down, she was like any other young women meeting a new man for the first time.
"How could he not? You are smart and clever. Not to mention beautiful."
Alia scoffed and rolled her eyes. "I don't want him to like me because I'm beautiful."
Because of Oberyn's favoritism towards his youngest daughter, he made sure she had the best education. Alia loved to debate and voice her opinions.
"You will be a worthy match for someone someday. Maybe it will be with the Wolf King or maybe it will be with someone else."
Alia sighed. "I want a love like you and Papa."
"Oh, little one. You will. I am sure of it. Perhaps it will happen when you least expect it. That way you will have a beautiful love story to tell your children. For now, just relax. Enjoy your last few hours in Dorne before we venture into the cold."
Of course, Alia didn't know this would be the last time she set foot in her kingdom for a while.
