Summary: Din comes to Mos Pelgo to find a Mandalorian and ends up finding one he never expected.
Cobb reached for his blaster, but before he could a young brunette came storming into the cantina. She leveled a blaster at Din.
Din whipped out his own and pointed it at her.
Cobb rushed over to her and grabbed her arm, pushing it down. "Put the blaster down! Put it down!" Cobb snapped at her.
"What is her problem?" Din asked, not sure why this small woman wanted to kill him.
"Shut-up Tinhead!" the woman snapped, "Mandalorians are the reason my parents are dead!"
"He's not here to hurt you or me. He just wants the armor back," Cobb told her.
This seemed to placate her, because she put the blaster down.
Cobb put a hand on her cheek and kissed her temple.
"Are you two...together?" Din asked.
"Yeah. What of it?" the woman spat.
Cobb was a man in his late forties or early fifties. He had salt and pepper hair and the woman looked to be in her late twenties or early thirties.
"Nothing. I just..." Din lowered his blaster.
A rumbling started outside.
"Not again!" the woman muttered, running outside.
"Mira!" Cobb yelled, running after her. He grabbed her and pulled her back into him as Din came to stand next to him.
An alarm echoed throughout the city and people ran for their homes.
The sand rippled as the krayt dragon moved under it. It burst out of the ground and ate a Bantha minding its own business drinking water.
"Maybe we can work something out," Cobb told Din, going back inside the cantina.
Mira turned to follow him and heard a cooing noise.
A little green head popped out of a pot.
"Oh, hello ad...little one." She picked him up and hugged him to her chest. "You're okay now."
Din could hear her humming something under her breath. "What are you humming?" Din asked her.
She stopped. "Hmmm?"
"That song."
"Oh, it's just something my mother used to sing to me at night." She turned and handed the child back to Din.
Cobb and Din made a deal that if Din would help rid them of the krayt dragon, he'd give the armor back. Din and Cobb mounted their land speeders.
Mira started to get on behind Cobb.
"She's not coming," Din said.
"I don't go anywhere without her," Cobb told him, "She's saved my life more times than I care to admit."
"You don't have to worry about, Mandalorian. I can hold my own in a fight," Mira reassured him.
Soon they were speeding across the deserts of Tatooine.
"You don't understand what it was like. The town was on its last legs. It started after we got the news of the Death Star blowing up. The second one, that is."
Mira had been a small child when the Empire fell, so she didn't remember much of the war.
"The Empire was pullin' outta Tatooine. There was blaster fire over Mos Eisley. The occupation was over. We didn't even have time to celebrate. That very night, the Mining Collective moved in. Power hates a vacuum and Mos Pelgo became a slave camp overnight."
Cobb spoke of how he escaped death that night.
"I lit out. Took what I could from the invaders. Grabbed a camtono. I had no idea it was full of silicax crystals. I guess every once in a while, both suns shine on a womp rat's tail. I wandered for days. No food, no water. And then I was saved."
He spoke of how the Jawas opened the camtono and found the silicax crystals.
"The Jawas wanted the crystals. They offered their finest in exchange. And my treasure bought me more than a full waterskin. It bought my freedom and I used that freedom to liberate my town."
After spending the night with some Tusken traders, they rode to the krayt dragons cave. One of them led a Bantha to the mouth of the cave to help keep the krayt dragon asleep. The krayt dragon came lunging out of the cave and ate the Tusken trader instead.
The baby whimpered and Mira picked him up muttering to him in a language Cobb couldn't understand. She could feel the Mandalorian's eyes on her through his helmet.
While the Tusken's planned their new attack, Din approached Mira. "You know Mando'a?"
"What?"
"I heard you with the child. And that song you were singing. It was a Mandalorian lullaby," Din said.
Mira sighed. "How'd you know?"
"Because the women who raised the foundlings used to sing it. How do you know a Mandalorian lullaby?"
"Because my parents were Mandalorians. They were killed. Right in front of me. Just for being who they were. So I ran away and abandoned the culture. I eventually made it here to Tatooine and met Cobb."
"I am sorry about your family. The Covert on Nevarro was attacked and I lost many of my tribe."
Mira put a hand on his arm. "I'm sorry about your people."
Din noticed how she called them his people and not their people.
Cobb handed the armor to Din, who strapped it to his landspeeder. "I hope our paths cross again," Cobb told him.
"As do I."
"Now, you tell your people I wasn't the one that broke that." Cobb shook Din's hand and left Mira and Din to say their goodbyes.
She extended her forearm and Din took ahold of it. She wrapped her hand around his elbow. "It's been an honor meeting you. I hope you find more of your kind."
"Our kind."
Mira gently shook her head.
"Your kind. I'm not a Mandalorian."
"You are a Mandalorian, regardless of whether you took the Creed or not. It's in your blood. This is the Way."
Mira smiled. "This is the Way." She stepped forward and placed a kiss on the side of Din's helmet.
Din gently grasped the back of her head and tapped her forehead with his helmet. A tear escaped her eye and Din wiped it away, softly murmuring to her in Mando'a.
Cobb noticed the interaction. Din shot off into the desert and Cobb wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "You never told me you were a Mandalorian."
Mira playfully rolled her eyes and shoved him. "I'm not. That was my past."
"You know it's okay to talk about it sometimes."
Mira looked up at him and cupped his face in her hands. Mimicking Din, she slid her hand to the back of Cobb's head and brought his forehead to hers. "Cyar'ika," she breathed.
"My Mandalorian."
