it only took fortune cookies and ghosts.

They've both been frenemies since kindergarten. One fortune cookie will change their lives forever with some adventures that'll never go perfectly planned, and they won't even know it. It's sort of another enemies-to-lovers story? Inspired by the "13 Little Blue Envelopes" series. It took me three days, so hope y'all enjoy it! There are plenty of ghosts, plenty of adventure, plenty of food, and plenty of familial embarrassment. Romance? Read to find out.

"Getcha, getcha, getcha head in the game!" my teammates all chanted as I passed the ball to EJ. It was the final minute of the game, and we were neck-to-neck with North High. I held my breath as the world stood still, my eyes only focused on the ball soaring through the air. It landed in the basket with that satisfying "swoosh" noise I'd never get tired of hearing. "And with 18 to 17, the East High Wildcats win!" the announcer yelled. We all cheered as North High looked on in defeat. I came over and patted them all on the backs. "There's always next year," I offered. I saw my teammates embrace their significant others (cheerleaders and other team members) on the sidelines and smiled for a brief moment. I'm not one to fall in love too easily, okay? I'm just not. Maybe because I believe love is a lost cause, after what happened with my parents and half the population of America.

"Hey, everyone! End of the year party at Ashlyn's! You're all invited!" my best friend, Big Red yelled. He will take any excuse to spend time with his girlfriend. I'm the one third-wheeling them on every date because I've got nothing to do and no life to get back to.

The entire gym of East High kids yelled and cheered. "So are you, North High!" Ashlyn added, not wanting to exclude anyone. Caswell parties are legendary, and thanks to Ashlyn, everyone gets to come.

That night, I stopped by the party and grinned when I saw the guys. "Hey, y'all, what've you been doing?"

"We're just getting ready for the fortune cookies," Ashlyn's cousin EJ said. Fortune cookies are the best part of a Caswell party. I think that everyone should have them at every meal for dessert. It tastes better than ice cream and as a bonus, you get a fortune. What more can you ask for?

Red and Ashlyn went around the circle of humans, handing out cookies to everyone. They all cracked theirs eagerly, wanting to see what was inside. I tried to open mine, but it was stuck. "Alright, who's up first?"

It was EJ. "A fresh start will put you on your way. Does that mean I'm getting into Duke?"

Next up was Kourtney. "Your future holds many surprises for you, most often unexpected." I suspect something between her and Howie.

After everyone had read from theirs, mine finally opened. "Eight letters. Eight adventures that will change your life forever," I read. "Pick them up in school in the 'haunted' corridor. There, you'll find a package detailing instructions for you to follow. Who knows, maybe you'll meet the ghost of the founder of East High. But pick one friend to go with, and choose wisely. It has to be someone you aren't exactly close with, like an enemy."

"Well, that was specific," I concluded. "Who wants to go with me?"

"Not in the mood for an adventure in the great wide somewhere," Kourtney answered. "You can fight a person, but you can't fight a ghost."

"I'll go," a voice spoke up. I rolled my eyes when I realized that it just had to be the most annoying person in the entire world. Nini Salazar-Roberts. We've been next-door neighbors since we were babies, and even back then we never liked each other. It goes way back with us to who shared the slide in kindergarten. We're not the biggest enemies, but we don't exactly like each other that much. "Just my luck."
