A Moth Against a Street Lamp

I'm a moth

Battering itself

Against some street lamp

The kind

That don't shine that bright

Just enough

To not be fixed

You were

The street lamp

I thought

You were the moon

Or the stars

Something heavenly

A celestial

On earth

You let me

Believe

Those lies

You let me

Hurt myself

Damage myself

Over and over

To be closer to you

You didn't

Stop me

Didn't

Try to help me

You watched

Unblinking

As I hurt myself

Over

And over

Again

And again

You laughed

You let your light

Be the only light I saw

I was helplessly in love

With your light

So blinded by it

That there were no others

For miles and miles

No moon

No stars

No other street lamps

Just you

And your flickering state

And me

And my broken wings

And bruised body

Your light

Eventually went out

And I had to come to terms

That you weren't the moon

Or the stars

Not a heavenly body

But some street lamp

That's worth dirt

I was broken

Just like you

I had to fly away

But my wings didn't want to beat

When there's no more light

To fly towards
