Terrifying

"Who do I have to thank for this?" River questioned as she stole as piece of fruit from the large breakfast platter in the foyer of the mansion.

"I'd like to thank them as well." Kol tried to say but was muffled by the bacon he was eating.

"Me too." Henrik added as he took a croissant from the platter.

"Well it wasn't me." Finn stated as he followed the smell into the room.

"Me neither." Rebekah muttered, now annoyed that she hadn't come up with the idea first.

"I can't take credit for that either." Nik stated as he came down the flight of stairs and entered the foyer.

"So then I guess we have Elijah to thank."  River concluded.

"It is something he would do." Finn agreed.

"It wasn't me either." Elijah added.

"Do I have another mate I don't know about?" River questioned as she took a mini pancake from the platter.

"Not funny." Rebekah deadpanned. Before any of them could come up with another theory, one of the dishes which was covered with a dark lid shifted in its place.

"What's under the lid?" Nik asked.

"Well finding out seems like it can only make this amazing food seem bad so maybe we can do that once I'm done eating." River excused as she stole another pancake.

"Yeah not happening." Rebekah uttered before slowly lifting the lid. If River was a cartoon character her skin would have been left behind as a result of the inhumane speed she used to spring into Finn's arms.

"Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope." River repeated, burying her face in Finn's chest, her legs wrapping around his hips as she clung to him out of fear. Finn held onto her waist tightly, his other hand supporting her head.

"Love, you do realise that you are surrounded by six of the strongest supernatural beings who are sworn to protect you? I think you can get over this extreme fear of birds." Nik tried to reason.

"Nah-uh." River muttered, the idea of the bird who was trapped on the plate under the lid still flying around the room petrifying her.

"There's a note." Elijah observed.

"Does who it's from happen to ruin the food?" River challenged as she subtly tried to steal yet another pancake.

"It's from our mother." Henrik muttered.

"Well that's unfortunate." River mumbled, before trying to bite the pancake.

"You're not eating that." Rebekah denied, tossing the pancake back to the platter.

"Does this mean that the food was poisoned?" Kol questioned, now comprehending how many pieces of bacon he had eaten.

"Probably not seeing as she wants to meet us tonight, 8pm." Nik reasoned.

"Too bad, we're not going." Rebekah objected.

"Will there be more good food there? Because if so you can count me in." River explained.

"You weren't invited." Elijah denied.

"What?" River exclaimed.

"Siblings only, sorry Angel." Rebekah apologised.

"Am I the only one who thinks this is just a cover for Esther to take River's life?" Kol questioned.

"Thank you for caring, Sweetie." River mocked, finally dropping down from Finn's hold.

"Too bad," Henrik concluded, "We aren't going then." As soon as the words left Henrik's lips, the bird which had landed peacefully on the banister then swooped down causing River to scream before jumping back up into Finn's arms.

"Something is telling me mother doesn't approve of that idea." Kol mocked.

"Yeah and I'm now happy not to go if there are any more birds involved." River decided.

-----

"After 2 months of being trapped in this mansion, I'm finally done." River thanked.

"Almost." Elijah corrected.

"Well once you and your siblings go and either kill or reconcile with your mother, I will be able to at least leave this mansion without the lot of you freaking out." River explained.

"You hardly make it sound as bad as you want it to seem." Elijah reasoned. River groaned before she rolling onto her stomach to watch Elijah who was getting ready in the mirror.

"What do you think this dinner with your mother is even about?" River questioned, subconsciously toying with the soft comforter on Elijah's bed which was beneath her.

"Well from Henrik's recollection, my mother was focussed on trying to harmonize our family." Elijah explained.

"Why does it sound like you don't believe that?" River challenged.

"He also mentioned how the other witches tormented her on the other side for what she turned us into." Elijah admitted.

"That's reassuring." River mumbled.

"It's fine." Elijah denied.

"It doesn't sound fine." River countered as she rolled off of the bed before walking to stand next to him. "Can I help you with your tie or something else that I can make sexual to distract you?" River offered. Elijah hummed, resting his arms low around her hips before pressing his lips to hers. As River then continued to try and deepen their kiss, Elijah pulled away.

"As much as I truly, and I mean truly, would love to entertain that thought," Elijah started, "I don't think I can be finished with you and be on time for this dinner."

"Okay well thank you for now leaving me with that idea in my mind all night." River dismissed.

"I think you'll survive." Elijah deadpanned. "I can tell Rebekah's already had her way with you." He continued with increasing distaste in his tone as he tried to wipe off the smudge Rebekah's lipstick which he had just noticed on the side of River's neck.

"Not my proudest moment." River muttered before pecking Elijah's lips and leaving his room.

"Too bitter. Too old. Too sweet. Too- yeah that's just terrible." River analysed, checking each bottle currently in the Mikaelsons' cellar. "I refuse to believe they don't have a single tolerable bottle of alcohol in this house." After a few more moments of River searching, she eventually settled for a tequila in some pirate-bottle-like-looking decanter.

Once River had served her drink in a glass, she then continued to explore the Mikaelson mansion, more specifically the rooms she had never been in before. Since River had only recently found out about Henrik's 'magic room' (where he had completed all of the boundary, protection, and other random spells before the siblings had left today), Nik's art studio, and the inhouse gym, she was intrigued by what other rooms she didn't know about.

She wasn't exactly sure how the Mikaelsons expected her to pass the time considering Henrik had spelled all of the doors and windows to the outside world closed in the case of an intruder, but this certainly wasn't what they had in mind.

-----

I don't know what I was expecting in this room but a yoga studio certainly wasn't it.

Don't the Mikaelsons all have alarming levels of anger issues?

River couldn't help but roll her eyes as she finished off another glass of tequila. A soft, alcohol-induced laugh passed her lips as she walked through the halls. River's reaction faltered momentarily as her breath caught in her throat.

River let out a muffled cough before tilting her head. The drunken comfort which was previously protecting her mind faded quickly as she tried to recognise the familiar scent in the air.

...

Is that smoke?
