"Okay, Feisty." Elijah warned as he caught River's attacks.
"Bite me." River taunted as she went to kick Elijah.
"My pleasure." Elijah flirted as he effortlessly caught and tugged on River's leg, pulling their chests together.
"Not fair." River denied before Elijah pecked her lips and released her leg. River was quick to commence her attacks once she retained her balance.
"It concerns me how violent you can be." Finn analysed as he watched River fiercely strike Elijah during their play-fight.
"Don't ruin this, she's winning." Nik explained as he too watched their battle.
"Not true." Elijah denied as he wrapped his arm around River and held her back from attacking him. River tried to nip at Elijah's neck, tempting him to let her go. When he didn't budge, River whined loudly, still writhing under his hold.
"Alright, alright." River acknowledged, finally calming down under Elijah's arm.
"That's the spirit." Elijah praised as he finally released her.
"Kidding." River decided as she spun away from him. "En garde." She declared, pretending to hold up a sword to him.
"What's going on in here?" Kol asked as he entered the living room where the rest of his siblings and River were.
"Nothing." Rebekah dismissed, narrowing her eyes at Kol as River walked over and sat between her and Nik.
"You can't all hate me forever." Kol argued.
"Yes we can." Elijah corrected as River curled into Nik's side. Nik wrapped his arm around River protectively, his glare focussing on Kol.
"You know I feel guilty." Kol explained.
"No you don't." Finn corrected.
"Okay well maybe I don't feel bad about what I did but I feel terrible about bringing River into it." Kol defended.
"Or do you only feel terrible now that we're all ignoring you?" Henrik challenged.
"That's not true." Kol objected. "But if you're all so keen on making my life miserable, is there anything I can do to make it up to all of you?"
"There is something." River suggested.
-----
"Are you really going to do this now?" River questioned as Elijah placed her down on his bed and she noticed the compelled girl in his room.
Mystic Falls has got to run out of human girls at some point...
With the rise of 'animal attacks' I'm surprised there are any left at all.
"I need a distraction after seeing Kol in a maids outfit." Elijah explained, cringing at the image in his mind.
"I will say it made his thighs look significantly more toned." River analysed as she took another bite of one of the cookies Kol had baked. Elijah grimaced at the memory. "Okay." River perked up once she had finished the cookie, "Let's do this."
River then stood up from his bed before walking over to the girl. After a moment, River then turned back to Elijah expectantly and gestured around her front.
"Come on." River encouraged.
"So the gradual independence isn't working." Elijah challenged.
"Not since we found out I have ripper potential." River countered.
"Fair point." Elijah muttered as he wrapped his arm around her waist before pressing a reassuring kiss to her shoulder.
"Thank you." River praised as she relaxed under his hold.
"Deep breath." Elijah instructed, "Listen to her heartbeat." River's eyes faltered as she heard the racing flutter. "Focus." Elijah added.
River took a moment to calm her breathing before she bit into the girls neck. River's eyes threatened to roll back as she was overwhelmed by the feeling of the girl's blood filling her mouth.
"Control yourself." Elijah warned causing River to whine softly. Once River had slowed down the intake as much as she could, she tried to concentrate on the girl's heartbeat in order to anchor herself. It didn't take long for River's control to falter again, her mind losing focus. "Okay that's enough, Elskan." Elijah decided, gently tapping her side.
River however, pushed against Elijah's hold, continuing to drink from the girl.
"River." Elijah uttered as he guided her to pull away.
"Damn it." River mumbled, instantly regretting the few extra moments she had taken as Elijah began to whisper soft words of comfort to her whilst she leant against him. "I don't get it." River uttered as Elijah wiped the blood off the side of her lip.
"Don't." Elijah scolded, forcing her to meet his gaze. "You have incredible control and that was not something to be ashamed of."
"I could do it with Rebekah the other day." River excused.
"Well what did Rebekah do differently?" Elijah asked as he adjusted his hold on his handkerchief and continued to clean off her lip.
"Nothing." River explained. "She told me to drink and I drank. She told me to stop and I stopped." Elijah tilted his head, trying to understand what she had said.
"That was all she did?" Elijah clarified.
"Yep." River confirmed before she paused. "Ew I hate this." River cringed dramatically, changing the topic as she tried to get rid of the taste of blood in her mouth.
"Yeah there isn't any cure for that." Elijah stated as he handed her a glass of water. "But bare with me for a moment, what exactly did Rebekah say?"
"I don't entirely remember but she was just talking about how much happier we'd both be if I stopped being all 'anti-vein-bloody '." River tried to recall. "I can't remember anything particular- give me a second." River interrupted as she felt her phone vibrating, indicating that she was receiving a phone call.
Elijah then turned away from River momentarily, giving River some privacy as she accepted the call. He then compelled the girl to leave, closing the door behind her.
"Hello." River stated as she answered the phone although it sounded more like a question than a greeting as the number wasn't listed in her phone.
"Hi, is this River Williams?" A strangely comforting female voice asked.
"This is she." River deadpanned, following every movie stereotype as she wanted to get this awkward interaction over and done with as soon as possible. River then turned to Elijah as he came up to her, pressing a soft kiss to her collarbone.
"This is Meredith from Mystic Falls Hospital." 'Meredith' explained. "Is there any chance that you can come in soon?"
"I'm kind of in the middle of something." River denied as she wrapped one of her arms around Elijah's back.
"This isn't something I'd like to say over the phone," Meredith trailed off, clearly nervous. "But there has been an accident."
If I had a nickel for each car accident which has affected me in the last month, I'd have two nickels...
Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice, right?
"Your parents-" Meredith started causing River to falter as she pulled away from Elijah. "It all must have happened so fast it's not entirely clear what occurred."
The sound of Meredith's explanation was blurred by River's mind as she tried to process what she was hearing. River's expression fell before the words River had been dreading left the woman's lips.
"I'm so sorry," Meredith apologized quietly, "There was nothing we could do."
And just like that,
River's whole world went silent.
