"Oh my! Bukas na yung Prom! Handa na ba lahat ng susuotin mo, Maxi? My gown is ready, last week pa! Ikaw ba, Crystal? Ready ka na?"

Tumango lang si Crystal at ngumiti. Nadismaya pa ng konti si Sybil dahil sa simpleng sagot ng kaibigan namin habang siya, ang energetic. Sanay naman na kami ni Sybil kaya wala na lang sa amin kapag hindi gaanong nakakasabay si Crystal sa kulitan.

Pero minsan nadidismaya pa rin talaga itong super energetic naming kaibigan.

"What about you, Maxine?"

"Surprise daw, sabi ni Mama. Bukas ko pa lang makikita ang mga susuotin ko." Ngumuso ako.

Actually, Mama wants me to wear her gown when she attended Prom on the past. Unfortunately, I'm taller and more slender than Mama. It didn't fit me, at ayoko naman na ipa-adjust 'yon. It looks perfect and I'm afraid adjusting it might ruin it. Marami kasi ang magiging adjustment kung ipipilit namin, dahil nga bitin sa akin at maluwag. It might take long if ever we push on the adjustment. Halos kaparehas daw ng tagal sa pagpapagawa ng bago. Hindi kasi siya yung tipo ng gown na de-ribbon ang likod. It was designed to fit to the body of the person wearing it.

Kaya naman nagpagawa na lang si Mama ng bago sa kaibigan niyang designer. It arrived four days ago from France. Kasama na doon ang sapatos at bag na gagamitin ko, then Mama already contacted our family's hair and makeup artist to give them a heads up for the tomorrow's event.

Honestly, I don't want to put effort too much, but Mama really loves to doll me up. Kaya pumayag na din ako. She was very happy when I let her choose everything for the Prom. I'm very sure it'll turn out great 'cause she has a good eye for fashion.

"Sayang lang at pang-senior lang ang awards bukas. Gusto ko sanang maging Queen of the Night." Hinayang na hinayang na sabi ni Sybil.

There's that rule. The King and Queen will only go to grade 12 senior high students. Kahit pa may mas lamang na junior high student or grade 11, hindi pa rin sila iko-consider ng judges. It's understandable since it'll be the last Prom that grade 12 students will attend. But there's Princess and Prince of the Night, which is for grade 11. Meron din naman awarding para sa junior high students, and it'll be the Nine Muses and Escorts of the night.

"Just aim to be the 1st place Muse first, Sy. I'm sure you can do it! Then be the Princess, and next as the Queen!"

Kumislap ang mga mata niya. Bumalik ang saya niya dahil sa sinabi ko. Crystal agrees to me by nodding her head a little enthusiastically. Mas lalong natuwa si Sybil sa suporta namin sa kaniya.

"You think so? Then, dapat kasama din kayo sa Muses!"

I mentally grimace. That's nearly impossible! There are almost five hundred Junior High students here in CHU, and half of them will participate in Prom. I have one out of two-hundred-fifty probability of winning. That's very low. Kaya hindi na ako umaasa diyan sa mga awards na 'yan.

But I want Sybil to win. Possibly Louisa as well and Crystal. Then it'll be enough for me. Ang panalo nila ay parang panalo ko na rin dahil konektado sila sa akin.

"You, winning is enough for me, Sy."

Halos wala kaming ginawa sa araw na 'to. Most of the teachers didn't attend our class today, and almost half the class is absent. Surely to prepare for tomorrow's event.

Pero may mga teacher talaga na magiging epal sa hayahay na buhay naming mga nananahimik na estudyante.

"Get one whole sheet of paper. Let's have a long quiz."

Each one of us freeze on that announcement. Literal na nasa pintuan pa lang ang teacher namin sa English nang sabihin niya 'yon.

"Pero ma'am, marami po ang wala." I mentally thank Pristine for speaking up.
