It had been a few weeks since the showdown with Marcus and Douglas, and things were finally starting to settle down. Life had returned to some semblance of normal, but for Harper, things had shifted in ways she wasn't quite ready to address.
After all, Lyla had been kept in the dark about the dangerous world Harper had been living in, and it was time for her to know.
Harper had sat her down and, with a mix of excitement, fear and relief, told Lyla everything—every dangerous situation she had been in, from jumping into an active recycling center to rescuing Adam, Bree and Chase, to the many life-threatening situations she'd narrowly survived.
Lyla's reaction had been anything but calm. At first, she was in complete disbelief, her eyes wide with shock as she processed everything Harper was telling her. When Harper casually mentioned that she had risked her life multiple times—from a malfunctioning robot, to nearly suffocating in a gas leak—Lyla's face drained of color.
Harper had been holding onto so many thoughts for so long, and finally, when Lyla was sitting there, ready to listen, she couldn't stop herself from spilling it all out. The floodgates opened, and the stories of her time with Adam, Bree and Chase poured out like a rushing river.
She started with the basics—the bionic abilities of the Davenport-Dooley siblings, explaining how each one had their own unique skills. It was a relief to finally talk about it, to no longer carry the burden of keeping their secret. She went on to explain how she had gotten involved with them, how they had all become like family.
The stories came rushing out, from the seemingly insignificant moments to the life-threatening situations.
Lyla was distraught, but Harper reassured her with a smile about the ridiculous and non-deadly situations they were in most of the time thankfully. In fact, Lyla let out a laugh at how they handled things during it.
From the stories, it was obvious to Lyla just how deep that bond went. Harper had become a part of something much bigger than herself, something that was more than just a friendship—it was a connection, a team, a family. Lyla could see how much the Davenports meant to her little sister, how intertwined they had become in her life. It wasn't just about surviving the dangerous moments together—it was about the trust, the loyalty, and the care they shared for each other. Harper had been welcomed into their world, and in return, she had become a part of it in ways that couldn't easily be undone.
And then there was the situation with Chase. The one that Harper had been avoiding thinking about.
The encounter in the Lab from a few weeks ago was still fresh in both their minds, though neither of them had spoken a word about it since. The electric tension that had buzzed between them in that moment hadn't gone away, and though their friendship had carried on as normal, there was an undeniable awkwardness whenever they were in the same room.
Neither knew how to bridge the gap that had formed after that night.
It wasn't like things had changed overnight, but the unspoken words and the close call in the Lab had created a small but noticeable divide. Every time Harper saw Chase, she couldn't help but remember the way he'd made her heart race, the way they had shared a moment so close that it had almost shifted into something more.
