As usual, Mr. Davenport gathered the teenagers in the Lab. Bree, Chase and Harper sat on top of the cyber desk, Adam sat on one of the stools while Leo leaned against the cyber desk. And, as expected, there was Mr. Davenport, proudly showing them a brand-new device he had been working on.
"Okay, guys, say hello to my latest invention, the cryo-blaster." Mr. Davenport announced enthusiastically as he held the device, a sleek, silver gadget with buttons across it. "This thing can freeze anything in a nanosecond."
Leo sarcastically clapped. "Bravo, Big D. You invented ice."
The grin on Mr. Davenport's face dropped. "No, I invented a way for astronauts to travel to distant galaxies while frozen in suspended animation."
"Which is a fancy way of saying 'ice'." Leo clarified.
The rest of the group chuckled, knowing that Leo was always quick to poke fun at Mr. Davenport's latest attempts at grand invention. But Mr. Davenport wasn't deterred.
"All right, here, let me demonstrate." Mr. Davenport said eagerly as he snatched the cup from Adam's hands and set it on the cyber desk. "You guys might wanna step back because the ray from the cryo-blaster freezes everything it touches."
Bree, Chase and Harper promptly hopped off the cyber desk, giving the gadget space to work its magic. With a steady hand, Mr. Davenport fired the cry-blaster five times in rapid succession. Each shot hit the cup, and with every blast, the liquid inside froze in a quick, crystalline transformation.
The cup, now solid and frosty, sat as an ice cube on the cyber desk.
Leo sighed. "Can someone please tell this dude he's making ice?"
Harper pursed her lips. "Well, I mean, in a liquid form, water molecules have more energy than in a solid - they move around quickly, essentially bouncing off of one another. As the liquid cools down, the amount of potential energy is reduced, and the molecules start to move slower. When the temperature reaches around 0°C, the molecules stick together and form a solid – ice. So, technically Mr. Davenport you're making ice."
"Look, every space program in the world is gonna want one of these. I just need the element to fuel them, cytanium." Mr. Davenport explained. He motioned above the cyber desk, where a holographic display popped up, showing the location of the rare element. "And it's only found here. I'm sending you on a mission to the most remote part of Antarctica."
Bree tilted her head. "As opposed to bustling downtown Antarctica?"
"No worries, Mr. Davenport. We've been to way worse places than Antarctica." Chase reassured.
Adam chuckled. "Oh, yeah. Remember Bakersfield?"
The memory of Bakersfield was enough to send a shiver down the group's collective spine. That place had been a nightmare. The air was so polluted that Adam, Bree and Chase had to wear special safety masks just to breathe. It had been one of the worst missions they'd ever faced.
