Chapter 56

thoughts and telepathic dialogue

"Dialogue between characters"

Theo POV

The smell of fresh cooked bacon permeated the kitchen dining room as I sat there reading the morning newspaper. I was usually the first one dressed and ready and had made the habit of waiting for my mate in the kitchen. Her light footfalls could be heard coming down the staircase. I smile as I sip my coffee.

"Morning my love." Her voice whispers in my ear before she kisses my cheek as her arms snake around my shoulders. The corners of my lips tilt upwards as I turn my head to look at her.

Her brownish red hair was down today as it rested over her shoulders and on her breasts. Her hazel eyes were filled with love as she looks down and smiles at me. I let my arm wrap around her waist. "Morning. How did you sleep?"

She pulls away to make a plate of food from the kitchen island. "Fine." She says over her shoulder as she piles eggs, toast, and bacon on her plate.

I arch an eyebrow at her. "Are you sure? You were whimpering all night." I ask her. She glances at me and tilts her head to the side in adorable confusion.

"I was?" She asks in disbelief.

"Was what?" Cas asks as he walks in and grabs a piece of bacon off of her plate. She hits his hand away but he just grins at her.

"Tell her she was whimpering again." I direct him as I pull the chair out next to me for her to set down. She smiles gratefully at me before eating her food.

"Yeah babe, you were doing it again. Were you having a bad dream or something?" He asks as he piles all of the bacon on his plate and sits down across from us.

"Not that I can remember." She explains. Dean walks in and stops to kiss her cheek before making his food. He stops as he sees all the bacon is gone and a pile of it is in front of Cas. He glares at Cas before finishing his plate and sitting down next to him. Cas moves his plate away fearing Dean will snatch the food away from him.

Rachel offers her plate to Dean with a few pieces left. "Thank you sweetheart." He tells her gratefully before glaring at Cas again. Cas just snickers as she and I shake our heads. Honestly, those two fought like cats and dogs about the stupidest stuff.

"Don't forget we have dinner tonight Cas." She says as she stands to make more coffee. He nods with his face stuffed full of bacon. Dean's head stills before he looks at me questionably, I shrug my shoulders in innocence, and he turns his neck to look at her.

"What are you two doing? You went out a few days ago." Dean asks her curiously.

She walks back over and puts a fresh cup of coffee in front of me before smiling and resting her hand on my thigh. "His parents are in town and we are going out with them." She explains.

"Hmmmm." Dean grunts. I sigh and Cas pipes up, "It's just my parents, Rachel and I discussed it and she was comfortable with just them."

"It's fine, she can do what she wants." Dean says. She gives him a worried look before turning to me.

"How is the Waterford project going?" She says to try and change the subject. I let my hand squeeze hers reassuringly.

"It's going good." I tell her. Cas looks up and mouths the word "smooth" to both of us and I loved how fast her eyes narrowed at him and she turned her attention back to me.

"How do you think the Council Meeting will go?"

"I don't know. I know the rogues have increased in certain areas and they seem to be having better coordinated attacks." I explain as her brow furrows in worry. I kiss her cheek gently, "Don't worry love, we can handle it. It's more a question of how aggressive do we want to be."

I see the calculation in her eyes begin to whirl as she gets lost in thought about our current situation. I grin at her as she continues to deeply think before looking at Cas and Dean. Cas stares at our mate transfixed by her, while Dean seems equally lost in thought.

"What action are you wanting to take?" She asks us, breaking the silence.

"We have been taking a conservative approach to the rogue issue, only going after people that have attacked our citizens." Dean tells her.

"Do you have any men that track down potential issues or rogue groups?" She asks us looking at each of us. I nod my head yes.

"We do, but we could always make it a bigger operation." I tell her as I let my hand wrap around her shoulders. She leans into me and bites her lip before continuing.

"I think we should be more aggressive with this issue. If they are now collaborating we should be taking out the insurgent groups as quickly as possible." She says.

"We will discuss it with our military and security advisors." Dean says in a voice that signals this talk is over. They stare at each other for several seconds before she looks away and huffs.

"Are you ready to go, Kitten?" Jason asks as he walks into the room.

"Yes." She says before kissing my cheek and standing up. She walks around the table to Cas and kisses him before moving to Dean. She kisses his forehead before he could kiss her. She walks out of the room with Jason and leaves.

Dean looks confused and pissed as he asks us, "What was that about?"

Cas giggles but stops as Dean shoves him slightly, "It's because you are being too hard on her. She is trying so hard to make this all work and part of that is not letting us stop talking to our families."

Dean's eyes narrow. "My mother will stay far away from our Mate. That is final."

Cas gives him an empathic look before glancing at me. I shake my head but as per usual he doesn't listen.

"I am not saying your mother has contact with Rachel. I am trying to explain when I told her that you have not talked to her since the incident, our mate was very adamant she didn't want to come between us and our families."

While everything Cas is saying is true and I am sure Rachel has some guilt over the distance that is now between Dean and his mother, she doesn't understand that she is more important to us than our own families.

"Fuck!" Dean growls, "She is not to talk to Rachel. The other parents are not to encourage them together, and they sure as shit better not bring it up around my mate. I don't care about the distance between my mother and myself, but I will not lose my mate again."

Cas rolls his eyes at Dean's dramatics while he cleans up the table. "I've told her not to talk to you about it and I will make sure she doesn't if you are going to be this emotional. But here is my advice you need to back off our mate. You might be our default leader, but she is our Queen and she comes before all of us. She is allowed to talk with us about issues in our world. She is desperate to connect with us since she is not around us all the time now. She is struggling and you are an idiot for not seeing it." Cas walks away as Dean stares at him in confusion.

"What is he talking about? Why didn't she say something?" He asks me.

"Dean, your biggest strength in our group is that you are the problem solver. But you are not always the listener. Cas is. It's easy for her to open up to him, and come on, we all knew she was struggling with going back to school, just like we are struggling to be at work without her."

His eyes fill with torment over a problem we all know he can't solve, because ultimately it was Rachel's choice in what happens. We couldn't make her quit so she was with us and not hurting, but she also loves her job.

"Give it time Dean. It's a transition in our lives and we will all figure it out. Cas is right though. You need to not be as hard on her." I told him.

He hangs his head as his shoulders drop. "Ok, let's just go to work so we can get home sooner." He murmurs.
