Bobby drove the car and Preet was literally shivering by now thinking of the possibilities. Mickey held her hand in his and his hold was firm. Preet looked at him and Mickey nodded assuringly.
Preet took deep breaths and was ready to take a stand for Mickey knowing the struggle he would have done in front of everyone in his family that too just in a week to make them agree on their marriage.
She didn't leave his hand getting off the car and walked to her house.
Walking inside, Mini saw she was getting confident each passing step and she smiled.
Preet's father and grandfather were talking about their business sipping tea while Rano aunty was serving to them.
Preet: Daarji... Papaji... Mummy... Mujhe aap logo se kuch baat karni hai.
They turned to Preet and saw her holding Mickey's hand. Bobby and Vaishnavi too were behind them and Mini also was standing.
Preet's father (PF): Yeh munda kaun hai?.... Haath kyu pakda hua hai tera?
Preet: Yeh Dr Makhan Singh Alhuwalia hai...
Rano: Yeh naam to kabhi nahi suna to yeh munda dekha dekha sa kyu hai?
Obviously seeing Mickey just more than a couple of times around Mini in Babes wedding before 6 years made his face forgotten in her mind.
Preet: Yeh Mickey hai.... Babes ki shaadi me help karayi thi isne.... aapne vaha dekha tha.
Rano: (widening her eyes) Yeh vo Mickey hai jo Mini ke aas paas mandraata rehta tha... Tu haath chod uska....
Bobby: Mummy...
Rano: Tu to chup reh... Bol hi mat kuch...
Preet: Aap log pehle baat to sun lo meri.
Rano: Daarji aap hi sambhaalo apni poti ko ab... aapne hi side li thi na iski...
Preet's grandfather (PG): Bol Preet.
Preet: (her head got lowered in nervousness) Mickey... aur... main... ek dusre se... pyaar kart...
Preet was immediately tugged by Mickey when he saw Preet's father furiously stepped further and raising his hand was about to slap her.
Preet's father hand passed beside her cheek but didn't even touched her and she was then behind him because of the strong pull.
PF: Besharam!
Mickey too had lowered head by now but was holding Preet behind him.
Preet's grandfather too didn't said anything.
Rano: Khaandaan ki izzat ki kuch padi hi nahi hai in dono bhai behen ko.... (to Bobby) Tere ek faisle se dekh teri behen pe kya asar ho raha hai..... Aashiq banayegi ab yeh bhi.
Preet was again shivering and had clutched on Mickey's shirt on his arm.
Preet: Bobby Veerji... ne kuch nahi kiya.... 6 saal se... Mickey America me tha... Isiliye... bataaya nahi aapko... Kyunki aap shaadi karwa dete meri kisi se bhi... hum dono... college se saath hai... aur...
PF: College yeh besharmi karne jaati thi tu?.... Isiliye tujhe padhaaya likhaaya ki ek din tu humko muh dikhaane laayak na chode?
Rano: Tu agar isko college se jaanti hai to yeh bhi jaanti hogi na ki yeh kaisa awaara aur chichora ladka hai.... Babita ki shaadi me pata bhi hai log kya kya bata rahe the iske baare me?... Aaye din bandi pataata hai yeh.
Preet: Mujhse Mickey ne aaj tak kuch nahi chupaaya hai... Main sab jaanti hu... Aur Mickey ko aap log jaisa samajhte ho vo vaisa nahi hai..... Hum dono shaadi karna chahte hai... Mickey ne apne ghar waalon ko bhi mana liya hai.
