On July 15, 1927, there were mass protests by the working class in Vienna against the judicial acquittal of three fascist murderers who had shot a child and a war invalid in Schattendorf, Burgenland. After the Palace of Justice caught fire, the Christian Social government had the truncheon clients move out with military carbines and stage a massacre: 89 dead were left on the streets of Vienna, over 500 workers were injured. For the Austrian ruling class, the bloody suppression of the July revolt was a passage point to the establishment of the Austrofascist dictatorship, while the Social-Fascist Socialists once again abandoned the struggling workers.
The verdict in the Schattendorf trial, according to an article in the Arbeiterzeitung, triggered demonstration marches by workers from Vienna's outskirts to the city center, with the Palace of Justice set on fire.
Cop president J. Schober suppressed the riots with violent measures. The executive branch suffered 4 deaths and about 600 injuries, the demo marchers 85 deaths and 300-500 injuries. A one-day general strike followed by a traffic strike to bring about the resignation of the Seipel government was held. A consequence of the July revolt was also the growth of the Heimwehr movement.
