It was late in the evening when you found yourself alone in the Map Room, the flickering light of a single lantern casting long shadows across the walls. The names etched into the stone felt like they were staring back at you, each one a reminder of the lives lost, the sacrifices made.
Your hand trembled as you held the piece of charcoal, staring at the name in front of you. The pain in your chest was overwhelming, a deep, aching sorrow that wouldn't leave you alone. You knew what you had to do, but it didn't make it any easier.
You took a deep breath, trying to steady yourself, and pressed the charcoal against the stone. Slowly, deliberately, you began to cross out the name. The sound of the charcoal scratching against the wall was almost deafening in the silence, each stroke feeling like a dagger to your heart.
When you were done, you stepped back, your breath coming in shallow gasps as you stared at the name, now just a dark line among many others. The reality of it hit you like a wave, and you felt your legs weaken beneath you.
Before you knew it, you were sinking to the floor, your back against the wall, tears streaming down your face. The grief, the guilt, it all came crashing down on you at once, and you buried your face in your hands, unable to hold it back any longer.
The door creaked open behind you, and you quickly wiped at your eyes, trying to pull yourself together. But it was too late. You didn't need to look up to know who it was.
"Love?" Newt's voice was soft, laced with concern. He stepped into the room, closing the door quietly behind him. "What are you doing in here?"
You didn't answer right away, your eyes still fixed on the wall, on the name you'd just crossed out. Newt followed your gaze, his expression shifting from confusion to understanding.
He moved closer, kneeling down beside you. "I see," he said quietly. "It's never easy, is it?"You shook your head, your voice barely a whisper. "I just... I couldn't leave it like that. I couldn't just leave their name up there like everything's normal."
Newt reached out, gently taking your hand in his. His touch was warm, grounding, and you felt a small measure of comfort in it. "It's never normal. Losing someone... it never feels right."
"I should have done more," you said, your voice cracking with the weight of your guilt. "Maybe if I had, they wouldn't be—"
Newt cut you off, his grip on your hand tightening slightly. "Stop that. You can't think like that, love. You did everything you could. We all did."
"But it wasn't enough," you whispered, the tears welling up in your eyes again. "It's never enough."
Newt was silent for a moment, his thumb brushing gently over your knuckles as he searched for the right words. "I know it feels that way. It always does when we lose someone. But we have to remember them, honor them. That's why we have this wall. To remember, not to blame ourselves."
You nodded, though it didn't make the pain any less. "I just... I miss them."
"I know," Newt said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "I miss them too."
He pulled you into a hug, his arms wrapping around you securely, and you clung to him, letting yourself find solace in his embrace. The steady beat of his heart against your ear was comforting, a reminder that you weren't alone in this.
For a long time, you stayed like that, the two of you sitting on the cold floor of the Map Room, surrounded by the names of those you'd lost. Eventually, your tears began to slow, the weight in your chest lifting just a little.
When you finally pulled back, Newt looked at you with a sad but understanding smile. "It's okay to grieve," he said gently. "But don't let it consume you. They wouldn't want that."You nodded, wiping at your eyes again. "Thank you, Newt. For being here."
"Always," he replied, his eyes full of warmth. "We'll get through this, together."
With a deep breath, you stood up, Newt rising with you. He kept a comforting hand on your shoulder as you both looked at the wall one last time, the name crossed out but not forgotten.
"Come on," Newt said, guiding you towards the door. "Let's get out of here. We'll face tomorrow together, yeah?"
"Yeah," you agreed, feeling a small spark of hope amidst the sorrow. As you stepped out into the cool night air, you knew that with Newt by your side, you could face whatever came next.
