"Marry me," Sebastian Sallow said.
Time seemed to stand still for Penelope Silverthorn. The mind tweaked with indescribable emotions and feelings; something that one couldn't really interpret at the time.
The winter air felt thick. It seemed like the atmosphere was holding in the breath of anticipation — the earth stopping its spinning as it waited for a response.
Penelope's eyes remained closed, but her breath was steady against Sebastian's. Her hand placement was heavier against his chest, almost holding it as a grip on what to respond, but her lips were just parted.
"S-Sebas..."
"No, listen to me," Sebastian entreated. There was a beg in his voice, and he felt guilty for not letting her talk, but he was desperate. "I lost you twice, Pen."
Penelope clenched her teeth, her throat moving slowly as she prevented a close from every truthful syllable within his proposal.
"The pain eight years ago was awful, but the pain with the thought of losing you forever?" Sebastian's gaze was bored into hers even though she was in darkness. "I cannot bear to relive anything like that anymore. I cannot. Not on my watch."
Again, Penelope's fingers traced along Sebastian's ear, her face cold and flushed as she struggled to breathe from the emotions.
"If this is my only chance of regaining you back then..." Sebastian struggled, but he spoke his mind. He was tired. "...then be with me. Stay with me."
Penelope's eyes opened, boring back into the pleading man right in front of her.
The raw honesty that reflected behind his brown eyes silence any argument or refusal. It silenced every negative feeling.
She saw care.
She saw protection.
She saw pain.
She saw love.
Sebastian's eyes dropped on the glowing necklace around Penelope's neck. The green gemstone glowed vibrantly, signaling concern.
"I'm going crazy aren't I?" Sebastian whispered, the humiliation building on him.
"Sebastian," Penelope ached, but it was difficult to hide away the waves of emotions that welled in her eyes.
Sebastian just stared back, his brows furrowing, anticipating a proper conversation.
