Remember when Peridot was so scared of the storm because she thought it was the Cluster hatching?
I think that the Geode is the Cluster, and it's hatching. That's why the crack was there, and that's why Steven's spit didn't heal it. Because his spit only works on living things. Lapis' gem, Greg's leg, Connie's eyesight. But the Cluster isn't alive, it's undead. It can't be killed, because it's already dead.
