Chapter Twenty – Fell in Love with a Boy

"He turns and says ''are you alright''

Oh I must be fine

Coz my heart's still beating

Come and kiss me by the riverside."

Joss Stone

I didn't think I would get these nervous about meeting Lucas' parents once again. But there I was dreading the moment the door would be open and I would have to get in.

The whole ride from my apartment to his parents' house, Lucas warned me about his mother's behavior towards everyone who entered the house with him.

"If she puts you in any kind of awkward situation, just tell me and we'll leave, okay?" He told me after parking his truck in one of the garage spots.

I nodded and tried not to think too much about it. A few hours earlier I was completely okay with meeting Sandra. I knew I was going to like her since the first time I saw her. Even her bear hugs couldn't affect the way I saw her.

"She can't be that bad, Luke." I reasoned to Lucas who seemed even more nervous than me. He sighed and held my hand. We were still in front of the car.

"I know. And I love her, you know that. When I was younger and I had any kind of problems, she was always the one who I came running to. It's just... I want you two to get along with each other. But I know she's not easy to handle..." Lucas said and took a deep breath. I let my shoulders relax and placed my hands on his hard chest.

"You're not easy to handle either, Mr. Farris. Neither am I. So stop worrying. I should be the one freaking out her." I tried to get him to calm down and it seemed to work because short after that, I saw a smile appearing on his face.

"You're right..." He said. "Let's go then."

We walked towards the front door and before Lucas was able to knock on it, someone opened the door and wrapped him in a hug.

"Luke, dear, you should come more often. I missed you." Sandra said before letting go of the hug and taking a step back to look at me. She was wearing a plain turquoise dress with a white sweater and pearls. Her dark black hair was hanging on her shoulders like soft velvet and as I looked into her eyes, I could see how much Lucas looked like her.

"Darling, you came!" She said in a squeal and it was time for me to get my hug. I didn't care though. It was actually nice to be so well greeted. Especially when my face was plastered on every website saying I was an opportunistic slut. Yes, I read other articles about me. Not good, though.

"Hi Mrs. Farris. I'm sorry we're late." I apologized, knowing we should have gotten there at least 20 minutes earlier.

"It's okay darling. I know it was last-minute." Sandra said and held my hands leading me inside the house, completely ignoring Lucas' presence. "And you must call me Sandra. I'm not a stranger." She told me in a motherly tone that put a smile on my face. Lucas who was walking in our direction sent her a questioning look and then came to my side.

"Your father is in the backyards. You should go there." Sandra told Lucas, and returned her attention to me. "The ladies will be out soon." She said looking at me in as if she was planning something and Lucas, hesitantly, nodded, walking away from us.
