After I drove the both of us back to my house, Jeremy and I started to work on the muffins immediately.
"Mix the flour, baking powder, chocolate chips and salt," I instructed.
Jeremy heeded my instructions very well, though it was kinda funny to see him at a loss. He would process what I say then blink a few times and go on to scoop out the measurements of the various ingredients, spilling most of them on the table.
I smiled seeing him at work. How I wish—
My thoughts came to an abrupt stop when I felt flour being thrown at my face.
"Hey!" I narrowed my eyes at Jeremy.
"You were in a daydream again," he sing sang.
"Do you know how raw flour tastes like?" I asked him and he cocked his head to the side at the random change of question.
Before he could process what I really meant, I chucked a whole handful of flour at his face.
"Hey!" He protested and I replied with a "have a taste of your own medicine."
Jeremy's frown suddenly turned into a smirk as I saw him reach out for the bowl of eggs. "No...no...not eggs. They are freaking hard to wash out of my hair," I backed away from him.
"Come back here cupcakes," Jeremy laughed as he chased me round the kitchen counter.
"I'll do anything you want, not the eggs please," I said with a pout and Jeremy let out a huge smile. "Alright, anything for you cupcakes. For now, come here," Jeremy said.
"Why?" I asked with a small frown. "You said you'll do whatever I wanted," he replied. "Fine," I gave in and moved closer to Jeremy like he wanted me to.
I must have trusted him a lot, because the next thing I knew, I had eggs running through my hair. "Jeremy!" I shrieked out of surprise, causing him to let out a deep chuckle. I narrowed my eyes at him and jumped onto him, sharing some of the flour and egg mixture on my clothes with him. Sharing is caring, right?
Suddenly, the floor slipped from beneath me and my grip on Jeremy loosened. I was going to fall. I closed my eyes and braced myself for the impact, but it never came. "Urgh." I heard a groan. Slowly opening my eyes, I saw a chest heaving up and down rapidly in front of me.
No wonder it didn't hurt, Jeremy broke my fall. "You okay cupcakes?" Jeremy asked with his eyebrows knitted in concern. I nodded slowly and my eyes automatically trailed down to his thin lips. Flashes of the kiss the other night came rushing back to mind. I wanna kiss him again.
I could feel Jeremy lean towards me and I did the same.
"Angelle! Come help me with the groceries!"
I jerked my head back. Mom.
Pushing myself away from Jeremy, I got up and brisk walked to the garage where my mom was. I could feel butterflies in my stomach. Butterflies? Ha! I could feel a whole zoo. My heart was pounding a million times a second.
If mom hadn't interrupted, Jeremy and I would kiss again, right? This was not supposed to happen. As disturbing as it sounds, I didn't want to have an affair with my sister's boyfriend.
I hid behind a wall to steady my heartbeat before helping my mother with her bags of groceries.
"Hey there Mrs Avery," Jeremy greeted when he saw us walking back into the house. "Jeremy? Hi, what are you doing?" My mother frowned a little when she saw the mess in the kitchen. "Uh..." Jeremy scratched the back of his neck trying to formulate a response.
"We were baking, mom," I told my mother instead. "This is not what it seems like," was my mother's response. "Mrs Avery, I'm so sorry, I–" Jeremy tried to apologise but I stopped him. "I tripped. It wasn't his fault," I explained. My mother looked skeptical but left it at that.
"Please clean the mess up," my mother told me before heading upstairs.
"Why did you try to cover for me?" Jeremy asked in a whisper once my mother was out of earshot. I shrugged, "you do not want to face her wrath. Mom hates food fights. She thinks its a waste of food."
"What should we do now? I think we don't have enough ingredients to make a new batch of muffins," I frowned when I saw the ingredients left on the counter top.
"Its okay, I have something else in mind. For now, let's get this mess cleaned up," Jeremy said and I agreed.
It took us about an hour to get the kitchen back to its previous state. By the time we finished, it was already dark outside.
"I think I should go now," Jeremy said after we cleaned the mess up. "Okay."
That night, I couldn't fall asleep.
The thing that kept running through my mind was–I had to do something. I cannot fall for Jeremy further.
