JC's POV

I was staring at the fire while my parents tried to set up animal traps in the forest.

I didn't know why they decided to set them up in the pitch black. They said they couldn't wait until tomorrow because we needed to continue south as soon as the sun rose.

When I first saw the sign for Alexandria, I became skeptical. I was afraid it was going to end up like Terminus. Just a pile of rippers and smoking rubble. I had always wondered who had done that.

I could hear my parents talking. "Alexandria," I heard my mom saying. "It's 20 miles south."

I was torn out of my thoughts when I heard the two loud gun shots.

It came from the area that my parents were in.

"Mom?" I called. "Dad?"

I didn't get a response.

Freaking out, I clambered to my feet and grabbed my flashlight, running into the forest.

"Mom!" I called desperately. "Dad!"

Eventually, I saw two bodies laying dead on the ground, bullets through their heads.

As I slowly approached them, I immediately broke down crying.

Mark and Theresa, my parents, were gone.

I fell to my knees and sobbed over their already cold bodies.

Eventually, my grief turned to anger and I rose my head and yelled, "Who did this?! Come out, you coward!"

After burying them the next morning, I turned away from their graves, took a deep breath and started walking. Only one thought was on my mind.

Alexandria. 20 miles south.
