“You’ve got to be kidding me!” I yelled into my pillow when Eli opened the blinds. I heard him laugh, and I opened one eye to see the time on my phone.
6:35?!
It was Tuesday morning, and I was sleeping peacefully. That is, until Eli barged in the room, opening the door, and blinding me with the sudden light. I hadn’t gone to school with Eli yesterday, as if I was actually planning on it; I just stayed home on Monday and got some chemistry done so that I would be ready for Tuesday. Since I didn’t go with him yesterday, I figured I wouldn’t be going with him to school at all.
“Eli, please,” I start to beg. “You know I don’t do well in the morning. Why are you doing this to me?”
“I’ve thought about it yesterday and estimated how long you would need to get out of bed and get ready, along with us eating breakfast and leaving. This has to be done, Cass,” Eli says, “in order for us to make it to school on time. Good mornin’.” I could’ve glared at him if I actually brought up my head, and he hadn’t left the room after that.
It took me 5 minutes to get out of bed, and I hit the floor so that I could find out what I wanted to wear. I looked between the skirt and shorts, and decided on the white shorts, that still had the thick brown belt connected to it, and my blue ruffle tank top. I had some brown sandals that went with the belt, and that was it. I wish I had remembered to bring a jacket, but oh well.
I got in the shower, washing my hair and body, before getting out and wrapping myself up in a towel. I brushed my hair and teeth, and put on some deodorant, and looked at myself in the mirror. What was I supposed to do with my hair? Deciding to leave it for later, I went back in and put on all my underclothes before putting my legs into my shorts. After I pulled my shirt down, I looked at the time. I was 10 minutes early.
And then I realized I had extra time because I didn’t do my hair. I decided to split it on one side, and pull my bangs back to stay in place with a bobby pin. The rest of my hair was really wavy, and I grimaced. It could be worse; it could be extremely curly. I shuddered at the thought, grateful for the simple waves.
“Strange, you have five minutes to spare,” Eli comments as I come down to the kitchen. He pushes a bowl, milk, and a spoon towards me as I put my books down. “You’re really bringing school books?” I nodded.
“What else am I going to do? Sit and watch the wall?” I asked sarcastically as I poured some milk into the Reese’s Puffs. He nods his head, agreeing before looking over my outfit. He clears his throat.
“You’re wearing that?” he asks. I look down, confused. I didn’t think that my outfit looked bad…
“Yeah, why? Is there like a dress code or something at your school?” I asked curiously. I didn’t want to break any rules, even though I didn’t go there. Eli shakes his head no.
“I was just wondering.” I look at the clock, and it reads 7:50. “Oh, and if you need me while I’m in class, just text me. most of my teachers are too busy focusing on the lesson to realize that the kids aren’t paying attention.” I nodded my head, taking note and another bite of my cereal. “We should be heading out now,” Eli says, getting up and putting his bowl in the sink. I follow his actions, and grab my bag and books.
I looked around, and was suddenly afraid. This school was huge; maybe because I haven’t been to school since I was 6, but still. The fact that there were so many lockers and rooms made my head spin. How could someone remember everything?
“It gets easier,” Eli chuckled, watching me as I took in everything. “Let me guess; it’s like a whole new world to you.” I nodded my head absentmindedly. I finally focused on where he was taking me, and I realized that we had turned into a library.
