"Eli!" I whispered, grabbing onto his wrist. We were currently dancing with some of the girls and guys, having a great time, and then he has to leave. "You can't do this, Eli! I don't want to be left alone."
"You're not; you have all of these guys," he say quickly, motioning towards our friends. I shake my head.
"You know what I mean," I say. Eli looks at me sadly, before taking me to the food table.
"Cass, you'll be fine," Eli says, putting his hands on my face. "I'll be back sooner than you know."
"But –" I start, but Eli cuts me off.
"You know that secret you needed to find out?" I nodded my head. "Well, if I don't go, you won't find out." I pout, not liking this at all, and Eli grins. "You'll be fine." He kisses my forehead before walking away with his hands in pockets. I look around, immediately feeling nervous and awkward. I started to chew on my cheek.
"Hey, that was some entrance," Lylah giggles as she walks up to me and leans on the table. "By the way, you look great. Actually, all of your friends do. You guys found really perfect dresses compared to... All these other girls," she tells me.
"Thanks! You look really pretty too, Lylah," I smile. "Has everyone been talking about how I tripped?" I asked, nervous of the answer. Lylah shook her head.
"It's more like they're about how Eli was the one to laugh the hardest, and still make it all better." I rub my arm, and Lylah hits me with her hip. "Don't worry about it, Cassie. Everyone has embarrassing moments."
"Yeah, but it seems like mine come at the worst of times," I say bitterly. I look out, and see the girls waving excitedly at me as they kept on dancing with their dates. I waved back too, smiling at their having fun. "Did you come alone?" Lylah nods her head.
"Some would say that I was... A bad word, if you catch my drift, but I didn't accept any of the offers that were given to me. I didn't really feel like having a date, and by the third rejection, all of the boys around the school got the message. It's really liberating going with a bunch of friends, or by yourself."
"I bet it is!" I agree. "No worries about matching your date or making yourself pretty enough."
"Yes!"
"But it's your senior prom," I say after a thought. "Shouldn't you have a date?" Lylah shook her head.
"I'm glad I don't have a date for my last high school prom, because I was sure it was going to be perfect, with no mess ups or disappointments." I was about to say something, but I was cut off by coughing.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't... Cee," Melody said mockingly as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Nice little entrance."
"It was fine, Melody," Lylah said, coming to my rescue. "If you're so jealous, go tell someone else, because it's not going to make Cassie and Eli break up." Both Melody and I looked at Lylah with wide eyes. She finally stood up against Melody.
"Go Lylah!" I exclaim, holding my hand up to have her clap it.
"Look, Cassie," Melody says slowly. "I really liked Eli, and to have you –"
"If you really liked him, you wouldn't be acting like a child," I cut her off. "If you really liked him, instead of liking the attention that would come from you two being together, then you would've always put his feelings before yours. You can't be selfish in a relationship; you always put the other first. That is also for the other side of the relationship, too." Melody looks taken back by my words. "You would've let him go by now, because you would've seen that he was happier with whatever girl he was with. You want to know how I know that? Because I'm sort of living it."
