Shin Lee, an immortal goblin and protector of souls, had been in search of that one person that can remove the sword he was killed with, piercing his chest. Once the sword is removed, he may finally move to the after-life and rest in peace.
When travelling through Mystic Falls, he comes to meet a girl that can sees the invisible sword in his chest, that one person that can finally remove the sword and allow him to live in peace. He had come to terms that he had wanted to die long ago, but then this girl came along, and now he's terrified, because she makes him want to live.

Anyway, Shin used to be a warrior during the Goryeo dynasty. Blamed for treason, he was killed by the king with the very sword he used in the battlefield. The Heavens punished him by making him a goblin, a legendary creature that possesses extraordinary powers and abilities that are used to interact with humans, at times playing tricks on them and at times helping them.
He had been travelling around the US, exploring because he already had seen all of Europe. Somehow, he ended up in the small town of Mystic Falls because something called to him. That something was a girl in danger.
At first, he's sceptical that the girl can see the sword in his chest, but he gradually begins to love her and accept her as the person that can take the sword from is chest. But, then he realises that he doesn't want to die anymore.
He can be quite childish at times, but he's actually kindhearted. But, when angry, he's a terrible force to be reckoned with.
