As the only son in a family full of women, Dimitre Petrov was raised to take care of his sisters over anything and anyone else. When his youngest sister ended up pregant out of wedlock, he blamed himself for not being able to protect her from the boy. When the baby was born, he was the one tasked to give it away. When his sister was banished England, he went with her. When he found out the secret of Mikaelson's, he helped his sister escape. It cost him his life. He was killed, but then came back as something else, and even then he vowed to protect her.

Dimitre is pronounced Dimitri. He changes it to Dimitri when Katerina becomes Katherine. Even though they changed their names, he will always call his baby sister by the name she was born with, Katerina. She either calls him by his name or Батко (bátko), which is older brother and is often said with affection.

He was given blood by Elijah, who knew that Klaus would kill him because he helped Katerina escape. He wakes up in Rose's cabin, finding his sister already one of the undead. She helps him complete the transformation, and they eacape back to Bulgaria. When they find their family dead, he's heartbroken but pushes back his emotions because his father taught him that since he was a man, he couldn't cry. So, he wraps his arms around his sister and pulls her out of the house, promising that he will always protect her and that he would kill Klaus Mikaelson.

It was what he did. Dimitri became her only friend and the man thst protected her against anything, since they were the only family they had left. He blamed himself for everything that happened in their family, from Katerina getting pregnant to their whole family being slaughtered by Klaus.

In 1864, he has a crush on Emily Bennett but keeps quiet because she was his sister's friend. He becomes good friends with the people of Mystic Falls, especially with the Salvatore's. He became like a brother to them, trustworthy enough for Stefan to tell him about Katerina feeding from him and Damon to confess his feelings for his sister. At first, he's angry at them but realises that it's his sister who's playing with them. He confronts her, and that ends up with her being angry at him. So, when all of the vampires are rounded up, Katerina lets her brother be taken. She apologises to him by saying, "this is the only way you can protect me. Goodbye, Батко."

Anyway, forward to when the tomb vampires are awakened and it's Damon that pulls Dimitri out. He puts him in the cellar because he's dessicated and he's Katherine's brother, so he doesn't trust him that much but does.

Dimitri sees Elena and confuses her with Katherine so he starts talking to her in Bulgarian about how could he do this to him and how dare she come back. But, Elena's like "what? I'm not Katherine, my name's Elena Gilbert." And then Dimitri is more heartbroken because the sister he vowed to protect let him dessicate under a church and she would never come back for him. He then becomes part of the Save Elena Squad, but it's only because Elena reminds him so much of Katherine and he thinks he can save her and not have what happened to his family happen to her.

He sees Bonnie Bennett and he's in shock because she's so much like Emily, so he tries to get closer to her. But, Bonnie hates vamps so she pushes him away at first. It's a slowburn because he focuses on his sister first, and then realises that he also wants to protect the Bennett witch.

Dimitri hates himself a lot, so he tries to make up from past mistakes by helping the Save Elena Squad. He's soft, the opposite of Katherine, but he can become worse when angered. He loves his sister, to the point where he will forgive her from letting him be under that church for nearly two hundred years. He's torn between protecting the sister that left him and the doppelgänger that showed him a family.
