He is manipulative and ruthless, worse than Damon, having had learned everything from the one and only Katherine Pierce. After he turned, he completed the transition by drinking from the woman Stefan brought to his older siblings. Damon left several weeks after, but Ivan stayed behind because of the bloodlust and because he knew his baby brother needed him. But, he left several months after, when his brother was too out of control and would get them killed.

Several months after, while feeding from a young woman, Katherine Pierce appeared. Ever since then, they had been together. He was with her because she was part of his past, a connection he no longer had and secretly wished for. He honestly, truly did love Katherine, but those emotions faded into only lust and the enjoyment they had together.

When they hear that Damon, his older brother, is searching for Katherine in the tomb, she sends him back to Mystic Falls so he could make him look away from her. So, Ivan Salvatore returns home and wrecks havoc. Beginning with the tomb vampires whom he knows will speak about the whereabouts of Katherine, he kills a few and somehow manages to save his brothers.

He meets Elena, a dead ringer for Katherine, so he thinks she'll be the same as her. When he realises she's not, it intrigues him, to the point where he forgot he's Team Katherine and unknowingly changes to the Save Elena Gang.
