Passing and Blessings

"I'm glad everyone made it here safely" Rose said picking up the plates. 

"Jackie, so tell us how Jack reacted when your water broke" Ethel asked. Jackie sat there a little uncomfortable and Jack sensed it. 

"Well she was on the phone, and all of a sudden I heard her call my name" Jack said grabbing Jackies hands and smiling at. 

"Jack was confused out of his mind, I'm sure he was more scared than I was-." The phone rang.

"Ma'am there is a Mr. Patton on the phone for you" the maid whispered into Jacquelines ear. The whole table stared at her while she got up and excused herself. 

"It's probably just an old girl friend" Jack shrugged. 

"So what else happened Jack" Ethel said bringing the main topic back up. 

"This is Jacqueline" she said. 

"Miss Bouvier, this is Nicholas Patton." Patton? She thought the name sounded familiar though she just couldn't put her finger on it."I am aware my wife, Carolyn Patton, knew you?" Right then and there it clicked. 

"Knew?" Jackie asked.

"She passed away yesterday evening" he said in an emotionless voice.

"She... pas" Jackie stood there lost. Tears fell but she couldnt feel them. The laughters from the dining room were all but a whisper to her and the room around her soon became blurry. 

"It was her wish for me to call you" he said. He gave her the Funeral date, " Im terribly sorry to ruin your evening" then he hung up. 

Jackie dropped the phone and sat there crying. She didn't know why this has took such a toll on her. Dr. Patton was just a doctor . Caroline soon started to cry and Jackie once again was shot back into reality. She saw watermarks on her dress, she touched her cheeks and felt smears of tears. Caroline continued to cry, Jackie wiped her tears as best she could and picked up Caroline. She rocked her, staring at Caroline's face made her nothing but even more saddened. If it weren't for Dr. Patton, she would have not had this precious gift she was holding. 

Caroline smiled, and for a second it made Jackie feel everything would be alright. Time to have gone fast for her. She thought it would be rude of her to take so long. Jack heard Jackie's footsteps come closer and they all smiled at him as a cue. Jack got on one knee and waited for Jackie. 

Jackie with Caroline in her arms, saw the whole table look at her and smile . 

"Jacqueline Bouvier, will you marry me?"
