phil lester didn't regret saying it. he did mean it, he really did- and he knew it might be something dan needed to hear. but dan literally would not stop talking about it.

"you really mean it?" he asked softly while they ate breakfast on the grounds; he was watching dan pick at a muffin as if interrogating it. phil nodded, looking up at his face.

"of course." it was about the tenth time dan had asked that, but phil didn't blame him, and he was patient. dan's cheeks flushed.

"okay, but... do you really mean it?"

phil rolled his eyes, laughing softly. "yes."

dan blushed darker. "i'm sorry... it's just... hard."

phil hummed, grabbing his hand and squeezing. "what's hard?"

dan shrugged, avoiding his eyes. "believing you."

phil's heart swelled and he tugged at dan's hand until he came closer. he reached up to brush some hair out of his eyes.

"it's true," phil muttered, searching his face. dan still wouldn't look at him. he played with his fingers gently. "i promise. i wouldn't say it if it wasn't."

dan finally looked up, meeting his gaze. "yeah?"

phil nodded, kissing his palm. "yeah. promise."

dan smiled timidly, scooting even closer. "good..."

phil sighed. dan still hadn't said it back, which wasn't a problem, but still. phil really did love him, so it sucked about 10% that dan couldn't return it. maybe he just wasn't ready to say it.

either way, phil didn't let it bother him too much. he was just grateful to have dan in general. he would wait as long as it took.

he pulled dan halfway into his lap and laughed when he squeaked softly. "you're beautiful..." dan's skin went hot under his touch, which made him smile.

"you're dumb."

phil groaned and dan giggled softly.

"thanks."

"you're welcome." dan sighed, and hid his face against his neck, breathing slowly. "i think you're beautiful too," he whispered after a moment of silence. phil grinned, turning his head to kiss dan's temple.

"thank you, baby."
