Ben ran straight at us, ignoring all the skinny branches and twisty vines that were in his path. There were scrapes across his face from the twigs he ran through.
I should've ran. We should've ran. By the wild look in his eye and by the way he was running directly at us with no falter in his step, should've sent us running for the hills. Ben really meant he was out for blood.
I froze, I couldn't move. My mind proceeding to scream at me to run but I couldn't. Nothing worked. Not one nerve or cell.
Though just as Ben was only meters away from us, Thomas snapped out of his petrified mindset and did the most heroic thing I have ever seen or remembered.
Thomas pushed me out of the way of the rogue Glader's path, giving Ben the only option to tackle Thomas.
Thomas could've ran, he could've left me to be tackled by Ben. But he didn't. He sacrificed his safety to save me.
I landed on my back, a few feet away, banging my head on moist ground. The air was taken out of me as my back slammed into the ground, landing on a root of a tree. I was most likely gonna have a bruise on my tailbone in the morning, but at that moment it didn't matter.
I quickly pushed myself up.
Ben had taken Thomas down. He dug his right shoulder into Thomas' left shoulder, both his hands were wrapped around Thomas' throat, using his thumbs to block his airway. Ben's elbows dug into the insides of Thomas' elbows, pinning down his arms. Ben's knees dug into Thomas' thighs, now holding him completely still. Ben held his face centimeters from Thomas', snarling like a wild animal, saliva spilling from his mouth and onto his victims forehead.
Thomas tried to fight back but he couldn't, he was trapped under the sick boy.
Do something! I screamed at myself
Looking around frantically, I searched for something I could use as a weapon. My fingers scattered the ground for a rock, a branch, or anything.
Thomas screamed, his voice riddled with the terror and pain he was experiencing.
Without thinking, I got to my feet and jumped at Ben. I wrapped my arms around his thin torso throwing him off Thomas. I landed on my side, looking over at Ben who landed a few feet away.
Ben growled aloud as he got to his hands and knees. I got to my feet, making sure to stand in front of Thomas who was trying to regain his breath.
"What the hell are you-" I screamed at Ben but was interrupted when he now tackled me to the ground.
He tried to choke me, and hold me still, but my slim right arm squirmed out of his grip and I rammed my fist into his fallen cheek.
He gnashed his teeth in my face like a bloodthirsty wolf. I tried to punch him again but Ben found a way to pin my arms down with his knees. His left hand squeezed my throat, giving me no way to breath. I tried to throw him off by turning over, but he jabbed his feet into the top of my thighs, hitting nerves and muscles that sent waves of pain through me.
Ben frantically grabbed something above my head while I panicked and tried to escape his grip. As Ben reached for whatever was above my head, his left hand loosened around my neck, giving me the chance to scream.
"Help! Help me! Thomas!" My voice came out hoarse and croaky, but it was all I could muster at that moment before Ben dug his fingernails into my throat.
Ben grabbed whatever he was trying to reach above my head, and held it in his hand like a knife.
I realized then that he was holding a knife.
