5. Fall Asleep

"SO." Olivia said in a loud voice, sitting down at the table of my kitchen in front of April. "What happened ? Why were you down this morning ?"
Next to her, I chewed on a chips.
"I was stressed."
"And why ?" she insisted.
I sighed. "See it's-"
The microwave made a 'ding' sound. I got up and opened it to reveal the macaronies, set them in three plates and put them down on the table, sat down and started to eat.
"I was stressed because I am scared to not make it."
"You're gonna die ?!!!" April yelled.
"No, stupid" I answered. "Not be able to teach Eric and Trevor their lessons while keeping good grades and not crack" I sighed again.
"It's just that ?" Olivia asked me in a sweet voice. "Don't worry about it it's not that bad... You have to stop stressing so much about school, it's unuseful and only ruins your life ; tell us if we can do anything to help you."
I smiled at her. "Well, not today because it's OUR day, but maybe this week end you could help me to clean the whole house... Usually we do a huge cleaning every sunday."
"Sure !!" April interviened. "We'll come help you this sunday then" she winked.
"Thanks girls" I smiled again, relieved...a bit.
"And we'll tell Trevor to leave you alone" Olivia grinned to me.
I giggled. "Thanks"



We were at shopping. We decided to go out because it was sunny outside, and we were walking, not caring, casually. It was a really beautiful day.
We went into some shops and bought some outfits (A/N : they are in the external link ;P), then stopped at a froyo place. We spent a good time between friends then walked back, along the sidewalk.
A car drove along at our side.
"Ayo ma lemme get ya number !" the driver yelled at Olivia.
I looked up to see that it was Trevor. Seriously ? He will just flirt with every girl he sees ?
And then, Olivia did something that made me really laugh.
She dived her hand in her jean pocket and got out her phone. Trevor smiled, got out of the car and went to her, expecting her digits.
But then she put on her headphones and looked at him.
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you"
April and I bursted in laugh. Trevor, humiliated, tried to ignore us. He grabbed one of her headphones out of her ear and repeated :
"I said 'Ayo ma lemme get ya number'"
"You know I just hate when people took the headphones out of my ears. So I would of give it to you but since you took it off it just won't work out. Bye !"
And then she started to walk again, me and April following her, still laughing.
I turned around to Trevor and blowed him a mocking kiss, like he always does to me when he taunts.

Once back in my house, I high-fived Olivia.
"That was so great" I chuckled.
"No it wasn't" she replied. "He shouldn't do that while he's dating you" she said, poker face.
I pushed her, laughing, and she continued. "I mean, I know I'm great and amazingly beautiful but still"
"Screw you" I said.
"Oooooh did you say a bad word" April looked at me.
I playfully rolled my eyes.
"No"
They both laughed and a while later, they were gone, to their own homes. I felt kinda alone. If at least there was a pet in this house... Oh well. I'll get used to it.
I cooked dinner, changed into my pajamas and went to bed.
1 hour passed. 2 hours. 3 hours. 4 hours and I still couldn't close my eyes.
"Grrr" I groaned, getting out of bed.
I threw a hoodie over my bed shirt, kept my joggings who were my pajamas bottoms, put on some Jordans, took my keys and got outside to take a walk.
I scrounged the way to go to school. I was just walking, looking at the deep sky.
"Maddie ?" someone called.

I looked in front of me to see Eric, with a girl next to her who had his jacket on, and a suitcase behind her.
"Eric...hi" I spoke up.
"What are you doing here ?" he asked me, surprised.
It's true that it's rare you see someone you know in the streets at almost 3AM.
"Um...just walking" I stuttered a bit.
"Okay" he nodded.
He smiled a bit and walked past me with that girl, who smiled at me too. I faked smile back and continued to walk.
I wish I had a boy who would take off his jacket to put it around me. I wasn't cold, but I wanted a guy here to hold my hand to warm it up.

I walked past Trevor's house. I watched it, but didn't stop, I slowed down a bit, though I wasn't very fast before.
And surprisingly, I heard talking.
"Baby I know you don't want to but you really have to..." a female voice spoke up.
"I don't understand." a male voice this time answered.
I recognized him. His voice, always so deep.
"What don't you understand ?"
"It's my life. I do whatever I do with it."
"And I am your parent, and you're not 18 yet. Therefore it's still my role to not let you ruin your life. Someone is tutoring you so you should at least make an effort"
"Ma actually YOU don't understand !!" he shouted.
"Calm down your sister's sleepin'..."
"I don't care !!! Why do you care ?! Why do you care if I become a dustman or live in the streets ?! Because of Skai ?! You think you won't have enough money while growing old and won't be able to pay everything, so you wanna be sure to save her ?!! She's amazing mom, she can do it on her own !! She will become something great I know it ! So we don't care about me. I never worked well, and never will, it's too late by now. I don't give a flying fuck about my studies !!"
"Don't you talk to me that way !!"
"I do whatever I want !!"
"Trevor I let you do as many things as you wanted your whole childhood, so stop complaining ! I am your mother so you obey to my orders !! You gotta stop caring about stupid things like girls, whores, music and dance !!"
"What the fuck'd you just said ?!!!" he screamed really loud.
Suddenly I heard a little voice say something, and they both shut up.
"Hey baby..." I heard Trevor said, his voice suddenly really soft.
On the otherside of the door, I was thinking that maybe Skai has woke up because of the noise and was now in the arms of her big brother.
"What are you doing up this late ?" he asked, all gentle.
I didn't hear Skai's answer.
"Aw, I'm sorry baby"
I heard a light kiss noise.
"Go back to bed and sleep, it'll be better"
Again, for me it was silent.
"I'm sorry baby I can't right now, I have to stay downstairs. I'll promise tomorrow I'll sing to you, read you a story and everything.
...Yes, I promise."
I heard another kiss noise and somebody stepping on the stairs.
"See, you woke her up"
"But who put her back to sleep ?"
It stayed silent.
"You know what I need to go outside. I don't wanna stay here right now."
His mom sighed and I heard keys shaking, door moving.

I didn't think. In less than a few seconds my feet ran behind the house. I ran through a skinny hole in a grilled fence who was demarcating the entrance of some sort of park. I hit my own back against the hard tree's body, blending in with the darkness.

I turned my head really slowly and saw him taking the same way I was. I stayed in the same position until I didn't hear his footsteps anymore.
I released my breath that I was holding, and stepped out of the tree. I stayed there standing, for a few minutes.
What was all of this ? What did I just heard ? Trevor's mom was apparently telling him to work...and he didn't understand why, because it's his life, not hers... I thought his mom kinda didn't care. He wasn't always nice, he was a jerk, but he wasn't mean... So I thought if his mom would've tell him to do it, he would. He looked like he loved his family. A lot.
He probably does... But he don't want to obey.
What am I even thinking. I shouldn't of spied them ; I shouldn't of hear anything of this. It's not my business. How 'bout I forget everything ?

"Maddie ???" a voice said.
I jumped and turned around.
"Trevor ?! Oh my god you scared me..."
"Sorry." he apologized.
Tonight he seemed kind of...off. Dry. Cold. No wonder why.
"What are you doing here ?" I asked. "At this time ? How did you come in ?"
"Um...I just needed a walk. And, well by the park's door." he answered in a 'duh' tone.
He pointed at a little entry on a fence, a few meters away from us.
"I turned around those houses to enter and I walked"
Right. The 'door' I used wasn't really a door.
"Oooh...okay." I nodded.
There was no noise during an amount of time.
"So...and you ? What are you doing here ?" he asked to fill the silence.
"Oh... I couldn't fall asleep, so I walked in the park."
"Okay."

It was silent again.
"Wanna walk ?" he asked.
"Sure" I answered, maybe a little bit too quickly.
We both walked in the park, side by side. We weren't talking, but we were comfortable. Not awkward. Our arms in our sweatshirt's pockets. His hood on. Mine off.
And then I realized my jacket had short sleeves. And now I was cold. A while earlier, as I was getting randomly dressed to go outside, I wasn't planning of all of this happening. Eric, Trevor's arguing, Trevor's meeting... So I'd thought I'd go home once I'll get a little bit freezy. But no. So I'm not gonna say I was an idiot for taking a short sleeved jacket.
I shivered, rubbing my arms with my hands.
Trevor turned his head to me as we were still slowly, casually walking.
"Ya cold ?"
Again, his way of speaking. Always saying - by example - "puttin' " instead of "putting", "ya" instead of "you", "gon' " instead of "gonna" or "going to"...and many others. It wasn't bothering me. The first times I was hearing it, it sounded weird, but now I just noticed and smiled at it. You get used to it, I guess.
"A bit" I smiled.
And surprisingly, he took off his hoodie and put it around my shoulders, leaving him in a white shirt with some designs on it, that I didn't bother to take a look at.
"Thank you..." I smiled at him.
He smiled back. A real smile.
I zipped up the sweatshirt, my body floating in it. A huge feeling of warmth envelopped me. The pockets were so big that even if I'd put my hands in it, I'd still be cold.
I rubbed my hands together to get some heat, in vain. Trevor got closer to me and took my hand in his. He slowly rubbed it and soon, my whole hand got warmer. I left it in his big one.

And then I realized I had a boy next to me who would take off his jacket to put it around me, and hold my hand to warm it up.
