You poured some more of the drink in your cup and glanced around the room for your friends.
This is the first time you've been out of your house in weeks. Your breakup with Taylor has been draining. Your relationship was unhealthy, you both knew that. But for the longest time, neither of you could seem to let go.
That was until things became too overwhelming one day. You fought a lot, but it was by far the most intense. Taylor uttered some pretty terrible things to you and in the heat of the moment you said some pretty harsh things back, and you ended up leaving during the night.
It wasn't something you were proud of, but you're trying to move on. And you only hoped that Taylor was too. But only, she wasn't.
You heard someone clear their throat from behind you. You were ready to apologize, thinking you were standing in someone's way. But when you turned around and saw Taylor standing behind you you became speechless.
"Taylor? What are you doing here?" You weren't afraid of her. You know that she'd never lay a hand on you, no matter how toxic your relationship was. But the last time you saw her things were different. You weren't great at confrontation. You weren't ready for this.
She rolled her eyes at you. "My friends are here too, y/n." She pressed her tongue against her cheek and looked anywhere but at you. But a moment later, her big blue eyes were back on you and she sighed heavily. "We should talk."
You shook your head, knowing yourself well enough to know that if you spent much longer with her you would fall right back into your old, unhealthy habits once again.
"I don't think that's a good idea."
"I think I deserve an explanation, don't you? I don't understand what happened. I went to sleep that night with you next to me then woke up hours later and you were gone."
She was getting angry and growing frustrated and all you could do was sigh.
"I left because we aren't good for each other. Taylor, you and I both know it's time for us to let each other go."
You watched as tears filled her eyes. She wasn't as angry with you as she was before. She was... sad. A side of her you didn't see too often.
"I don't wanna lose you..." She whimpered and reached for your hand. She held it tight in her own, her thumb brushing against your knuckles softly as her tears started to fall.
She knows she hasn't always treated you right. She knows you deserve better, but letting you go is hard nonetheless.
"There has to be something I can do. I can change and-" She paused, her voice shaky as panic started to rush over her. Her moods were changing quickly, as they often do. You learned that fast and it was just another reason you needed to walk away.
"There isn't anything you can do..." She clenched her jaw, torn between feeling angry and sad. "We're not good for each other. We both deserve better. I'm sorry for leaving the way I did. But I can't take this anymore. It's never gonna work between us, Tay."
She hung her head but to your surprise, she also nodded and let your hand drop by your side again. "Can we maybe be friends?" She asked as she gnawed on her lip nervously.
"One day, maybe. I think we just need space and time apart first."
"Okay." She took one last look at you and walked away. You let out a heavy sigh, feeling like the weight of the world had somehow been lifted from your shoulders.
That was the closure you may have needed. Maybe, one day, things could be okay between you both and you could be just friends. But for now, you needed to move on. You both did.
