"Are you sure you'll be okay back here? I worry about you."
"Taylor, I'll be fine." You assured her and took hold of her hand as you made yourself cozy on the sofa in the dressing room. "I've got Bailey here to keep me good company. You go practice for the show tonight!" You nudged her waist playfully with your elbow while using your other hand to run through your little pup's, Bailey, fur.
She gave you a quick kiss and headed out the door. You pulled out your phone and started to scroll through social media to see what your friends were all up to while you're touring with Taylor for the next four months of her shows.
Bailey began to bark beside you, nudging your hand with his nose. You just shook your head and gazed over at your pup. "What, Bailey?" You brushed your fingers through his fur, thinking he only wanted your attention. But he wouldn't stop barking and whining.
You kissed his head and picked your phone back up. Though you felt a little shaky, you didn't think much of it. You ignored the barking, simply running your free shaky hand through his fur, thinking he'd just calm down sooner or later.
But when he realized you weren't paying attention to his signals, he got off the sofa and ran out the door. You sat up to go follow him, but when you sat up you felt your heart begin to race and your head starts to feel funny. You squeezed your eyes shut as the room started to spin.
Meanwhile, your dog was running down the hall backstage and then out the curtains to where Taylor was rehearsing for tonight's show. He barked loudly as he made his way to Taylor, causing her to freeze on her feet.
"Bailey? Hey, buddy, what is it?"
He was frantic, whining, and barking and pacing around.
Taylor's eyes went wide, a sinking feeling in her chest when she realized what was happening.
"Bailey? Is y/n alright? Is it her blood sugar?"
She began to feel anxious. The mic slipped right out of her hand, rehearsing for the show being the very least of her worries. She's seen Bailey behave this way before, but only once or twice.
You've had diabetes for so long that Taylor always figures that you know when it's too high or too low. Bailey is always there to get your attention, always there to signal when you need to check it.
And she worried about seeing him acting so frantic. It made her mind jump to the worst-case scenario right away.
"Take me to her!" She told Bailey and followed him as he ran backstage and down the long hallway. She stood in the doorway, watching him run to you and whine.
"Y/n!" She ran to you, kneeling on the floor in front of you. She noticed that some of the color had drained from your skin. "Your heart is racing!" She spoke worriedly as she placed her hand over your fast-beating heart. "Why didn't you listen to Bailey? He was alerting you!" She said as she stood on her feet to grab her bag that she always carries with her when you're around.
She refills it every day with things you may need. Juice, gumdrops, jelly beans; all the things she knows can bring your sugar up when it's too low.
"Drink the juice, baby. Eat a few of these jelly beans. It's gonna be alright." She said as she rubbed your back, watching as you took a few sips of the juice. "Good job."
A few kisses were peppered to your shoulder. Her heart was pounding, her mind racing so fast she started to feel dizzy herself.
"Why didn't you listen to Bailey?"
"I just thought he wanted some attention." You said, popping one of the jelly beans into your mouth. "You've been spoiling him with it lately."
"Yeah, because he's a good boy!" She said, petting his fur and watching closely as he stayed by your side.
"I didn't feel funny at first. When you left I felt perfectly fine. It was only when he went searching for you that I started to feel weird. I was gonna go find him but I felt dizzy and sleepy,"
"All symptoms of your low blood sugar." She reminded you as she brushed her fingers along your thigh. "I love you. I want you to take care of yourself. Listen to Bailey, he senses these things for a reason."
"I will. Thanks for coming to check on me."
"Of course. He was frantic. Scared me half to death." She giggled, watching as you popped a jelly bean in your mouth and then opened her own so you could toss one into hers. She chewed it and kissed your head lingeringly afterward.
"Feeling any better?"
"Yeah, a little."
"Good. That's really great." She said before falling onto the sofa beside you. Bailey stretched out in the space between the both of you. He was much calmer now and you seemed to be feeling better than you did minutes ago, but she wasn't leaving your side till you felt like yourself again.
