"Hey, Carter," one of the boys in Carter's class teased, making Carter turn his head away from the door and to the boys in front of him. "Where's your mom, huh?"
"She'll be here." He spoke as he fidgeted with his fingers and though he was confident in his answer and knew Taylor wouldn't miss out on a day so important to him, he couldn't help but feel a little sad. All the kids in his class asked their parents to come and they'd already finished up. Meanwhile, Taylor wasn't here yet.
He knows she's busy. Even only at nine years old, he knows she's got a lot of important things to do. But she's told him countless times that you two are the most important thing to her. He can handle her being a little late, he just hated that the kids in his class have a tendency to belittle him for everything little thing and this was just another opportunity for them to target the small boy.
"Oh yeah? My dad already went. Your mom isn't even here yet." Another boy taunted and Carter ducked his head. But he lifted it only a few short seconds later when the classroom door opened and Taylor's voice was heard.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry I'm so late!"
Carter's eyes lit up and he got up from his chair to go to Taylor.
"It's okay, mom."
She saw the sadness behind his big eyes and she bent down to be on his level. "You okay? I'm so sorry I'm late, I wanted to get here sooner but I got caught up-"
"Kids teased me." He spoke sadly. "But I am happy now!"
She looked at the boys across the room before standing on her own two feet.
"Sorry I'm late, I just got..." She paused and then said, "Off of my private jet. Had a few things to take care of." Taylor spoke to the class, sending Carter a wink.
Carter giggled as he sat back in his seat, knowing that it wasn't exactly true. But the kids that teased him only moments ago looked a little envious and after the things they've said to him today and in the past, he just went with it.
"So, I'm Carter's mom. My name is Taylor and I'm a singer and a songwriter. My job is very different from most but I love every minute of it."
"I know you!" One of the kids in the back of the class shouted, making Taylor laugh.
"I've spent most of my life on stage, performing songs I've written. Some imaginary, some not so imaginary." She spoke, smiling brightly when she caught Carter's eye. "Who here loves music?"
Mostly all the students raised their hand, Carter included.
"I fully believe each and every one of you can be successful with it. If that is your dream, you should always follow it and never let anyone tell you that you can't achieve it. You really have to believe in yourself and work hard at it. It's not easy work, but it's always worth it. Anyone have any questions or things you're curious about?"
Again, the students raised their hands. But Carter didn't, since he has a front-row seat for everything already.
She answered a few questions from curious and excited kids. She answered everything as honestly as she could, shared some of her most incredible moments before she finished, but not without saying,
"There have been people that told me I couldn't do it. People that didn't believe in me and people that didn't think I was good enough. But look where I am now. You have to believe in yourself first and foremost. You can write about anything. Anything and anyone can inspire you. For example, my wife and my son inspire me the most,"
Carter smiled brightly and at the heartwarming sight, Taylor did the same.
"You're all capable. Know that and believe in yourself, even when others don't."
The kids and teacher clapped before they started to talk amongst themselves.
She went to Carter, happily holding onto him when he threw his arms around her.
"Thanks, mom. You're the coolest!"
"You're welcome, buddy!" She laughed and rubbed his back.
"I have a secret."
"Yeah? Tell me, buddy." She whispered and knelt onto the floor, giggling when he whispered into her ear.
"I know you didn't get off your jet."
"Can't fool you, huh? You're just too clever."
"Yeah." He said, hugging her. "But I still think you're cool, both ways."
"Thank you." She whispered and hugged him tight with a warm feeling in her heart.
