Chapter 38

For the next 2 days, we all just hang out, and Tobias teaches me how to control the simulations without getting caught. We went into the sim so much, I got used to the needle in my neck. My fears were mostly the same thing, Marcus, Falling off of tall buildings, Jake dying, Having to shoot an innocent, and drowning. The last fear was unexpected at first, but then I remembered where it came from. Once, when Marcus was really mad, he ended up holding my head underwater until I was almost about to pass out. Tobias wasn't home that day, he was out helping somewhere.

When I started, my first instinct was to just make things appear in front of me to get out of the simulation. This time I have to follow the steps as everyone else does. I can't tell anyone that I'm practicing the sims beforehand, or they'll think I'm cheating myself through, and most likely kill me. Just like they would if they found out I was Divergent.

I wake up at 6 AM today, and already see Katherine and Jonathan up. I get up, stretch my arms out, and then go to wake up Jake. This time he wakes up quicker than normal.

"Morning," I say smiling

"Hey," He says, pulling me into a hug.

I hug him back and say "Jake you're going to put me back to sleep" while smiling

He smiles and kisses me quickly before we get up and get our clothes. I go to shower first and get ready quickly, combing my hair, and brushing my teeth. When I get out everyone takes turns going and then we all go down to eat breakfast. Jake, Katherine, Jonathan, Emma, and I ignore Liam the entire way there. Only Dean and Matthew talked to him.

We walk over to the food line and grab muffins with a cup of milk. When we got our food, we sit back down to eat. Tobias comes in, gives me a hug, and then walks to where his friends are sitting. After a little while of normal conversation, Jess and her friends come to sit with us. Jake gets up to go talk to someone, but I think it's mostly because he doesn't want to be around both Jess and Liam. We didn't talk to Jess after what happened with Liam 2 days ago, mostly because Liam's good friends with her.

"Hey," Jess says to me

"Hi," I say politely, smiling

"That was quite a scene the other day," Jess says

"Ya, well some people don't know how to keep their thoughts to themselves," I say, motioning to Liam

"Ah, well you can't blame the kid. He probably still likes you." Jess says, biting into a muffin she got

"Well, not like it's gonna go anywhere," I say, drinking some milk

"Well you never know," Jess says drinking from her cup

I raise my eyebrows at her and she looks at me and says "joking."

I laugh a little and continue to eat my muffin and drink my milk.

"Your not so bad kid ya' know," Jess says

"Really?" I say raising my eyebrows, thinking she's joking

"No, I mean it. I mean, besides the fact that you don't drink, or like parties, or do anything dangerous really, we could be good friends" She says

"What you mean like I'll be around when you need help with your homework or something" I joke

She laughs a little and says "Well no, but I think I can teach you the ways of Dauntless"

"I'm pretty sure I know what I need to know already," I say

"Not about Dauntless as a faction, I mean the people. It might help you fit in better" Jess says, putting her elbows on the table

"Ok, hit me," I say

Jess swings her arm, trying to hit me, and I duck and then say "Not literally! It's an expression!"

"Oh sorry, my bad" Jess says

I laugh a little and then say "Ok, so what do I change then?"

"Well, you should start drinking for one" Jess says

"Not for me," I say quickly

"Oh come on, everyone does it," Jess says

"I'm not everyone Jess," I tell her

"Okk... How about, more makeup?" Jess says

Jess has a darker eye shadow and wears eyeliner too. It doesn't make it seem like she's sad all the time, but definitely does make it seem Dauntless.

"Don't I wear enough already?" I ask. On normal days, I wear eyeliner, light eye shadow, and light lip-gloss. I thought that was too much already.

"Nope. You should use darker eye shadow" Jess says

"That would make me look like I have eye circles," I say

"Ok, scratch that too. How about something with your hair?" Jess says

"Ooo, depends what it is," I say

"Ok, how about something small? Maybe, dying a section of your hair?" Jess says

"Well, my brother would probably kill me, but I guess it couldn't hurt," I say

"You have a tattoo, I'm sure dying your hair isn't a crime," Jess says

"Well yes, but it took a while to convince him to let me do it. I don't even think he's over it yet" I say

"Well, it's not like he can control you," Jess says

"He's just protective, that's all," I say

"Ok, well how about you come over to my apartment after your initiation today? I can do it for you" Jess says

"Ok, sure," I say smiling

"Great, I'll see you then," Jess says getting up and leaving.

Just then Jake comes back and sits down next to me. Immediately he, Katherine, and Jonathan ask what just happened.

"Guys calm down, Jess just invited me to hang out later," I say

"Why? Not to sound rude but she is much older" Katherine says

"She thinks I should dye my hair," I say

"Would Four even be ok with that?" Jonathan says

"It's not a lot, and he probably won't even see it. In the end, I'm gonna do it anyway, whether he likes it or not." I say. I already know they're looking at each other since I always listen to Tobias. It's not like it is a big deal though. Almost everyone here has dyed hair.

"Katherine, do you wanna come with me?" I ask

"Sure, if Jess is ok with it," Katherine says

"Eh, she'll be ok with it," I say "When we both show up"

Katherine laughs and says "Jake, Jonathan what are you guys gonna do?"

"Jonathan and I were gonna hang out today, we don't know where though," Jake says

"Ok cool," I say "Oh guys we should probably get going, we're gonna be late"

They nod and we head for the doors, leaving the dining hall. I don't know what's gonna happen with Tobias when I go to Jess's later, but let's just hope he's not too mad.
