Chapter 52

 The Day after Four and Jake told Max what really happened.

I wake up on the couch in the factionless warehouse, Dean spread out across from me. The light is shining in through the windows, and all the factionless are spread out in circles, sharing food. However, my moms upstairs with us.

"Morning honey," She tells me

"Morning Mom," I tell her, rubbing my eyes

"Want something to eat?" She asks

"Oh, I'm not hungry," I tell her

"Rose, you didn't eat dinner last night. You have to eat something" She tells me "The same goes for you Dean," she says, looking over at Dean who's now awake

"Thank you, but I'm okay," Dean says

"Yeah, same for me" I smile at her

"Okay," She sighs "Tell me if you want anything though, alright?"

We nod and she goes back down to the circles sitting below us. She then stands in the middle of everyone on a platform and makes an announcement.

"Excuse me, can I have everyone's attention please" She calls out

Dean and I get up and go to stand at the balcony to see her and everyone else. She glances up and smiles. I do the same back, then put my forearms against the railing.

"Welcome to all the new factionless. I know it's tough right now, but trust me it does get better. We, like the factions, are also a community. A family. So please, enjoy your food right now, and we will get to other things about how to live in factionless later" She says. She steps down and applause fills the warehouse, with some whistles too. Dean and I clap as well but then go back to sitting on the couches.

"You think we're stuck here?" I ask Dean

"I don't know" Dean mumbles

I sigh and fall back into the couch. What am I going to do?

2 Days Later: (Rose)

It's been 2 days since we've gotten here. I started eating again, and I even went on train rides with the other factionless my age. But I still miss Dauntless. I miss my brother, I miss Katherine and Jess and Emma, I even Jonathan. I miss Jake too. I'd give anything just to see them again. I already know Dean is dying inside without Emma. I always wondered how love was such a funny thing. It gives you happiness and hope, but it also gives someone the power to break you. I don't want to be broken. But I also want happiness and hope.

My mom then breaks me out of my daze and says "Rose, honey, you can't stay on this couch forever"

I groan and get up "I wish I could"

"Honey, it's been 2 days. They would have been here by now if you were going back" Mom says

"Yeah, I know," I say

"How about you come down with everyone else, we're all talking together," She says

"Okay," I say "Wait wheres, Dean?"

"Oh right, he went for a walk on the pier. He should be back soon" She says

"Oh, okay," I tell her, getting up, we walk down and she begins to introduce me

"Well as most of you know, this is my daughter," Evelyn says introducing me

"How could we forget the princess who gets everything around here?" A girl from Erudite says

"Excuse me?" I say, thrown off

"You heard me. Daughter of the Abnegation and the factionless leader? What don't you have?" She says

"Um, a faction?" I tell her

"Oh right you get a nice little nook in the side of this warehouse, that's a house, food whenever you want, and you get nice clean clothes. This is such a hell hole for you, isn't it?" She says

"Ok, girls I think that's enough-" Mom tries to say

"No Ms.Johnson it isn't. This girl has everything, we have to lose the people we love. I left behind my family, just to be treated like crap here!" The girl says

"You think your the only one who has issues? Everyone here left behind who they love, not just you. Stop acting like you deserve everything good, and accept that you're not better than everyone!" I yell back

"When did I act like I'm better than everyone?! And you did you leave behind? Your mothers right there!" She yells

"My brother! I left my brother, my friends my boyfriend! And yeah, my mothers here now, but she was gone for my entire life! At least you had a mother!" I yell back

Mom then looks down, and I realize I messed up. She bites her lip, nods, then goes back to where we stay, or as the Erudite girl says, the house. I shut my eyes and sigh, and the girl smiles. I roll my eyes at her and go to find mom sitting on the bed.

"Mom I didn't mean-" I begin to say

"No, Rose it's ok. You're right" She tells me, getting up " I know I haven't been there for you, and I'm sorry. But I'm trying now. I'm really trying"

"I know mom," I whisper "I know you are"

She smiles and hugs me, and I do the same for her. "Don't let her get to you, okay?" she says

"I won't"
