Chapter 37

Black birds flew into the air, calls of furry echoed all around the wide blue canvas. Their huge dark wins flapped rapidly as they followed the aura of a bird that their master had ordered to kill.

"Where is he, sir?" One of the birds, a shadowy black crow, cawed, his yellowish eyes fixed between the trees where red macaws sheltered.

"I sensed him, he's in one of the trees." The leader of the search patrol, a majestic hawk with huge deadly talons, replied. The hawk flapped his wings and soared even higher into the sky to have a better view. There the hawk saw a red macaw with its red feathers all ruffled up while its beak opened in an argument with a small parrot who had stolen a mango from it.

There. The hawk let out a cry of victory and folded its wings. With no hesitation, the bird plummeted towards the tree where the two other birds where arguing at.

"How many times do I have to tell you?! I found it first." Toto cried, his pretty bright green wings spread to either side of him to look bigger than his bully. "It's mine by rights, get your own."

"These trees may your sanctuary after losing your companion, but you know the bigger fruit is for us, Toto. Now let go before I-" The red macaw couldn't finish its sentence when a dark bird crashed against it.

Toto jumped to another branch as he let out a terrified warning call to the other birds around him. The only thing he could do was to see with pure horror how the shadowy hawk sank its talons into the macaw while two crows joined in.

The macaw cried out with shock and pain as the crows bit and clawed at its wings as the hawk positioned itself in front of the bird's belly and raked it with its long cruel talons.

Blood splashed all over the branches of the tree and Toto's stomach churned at the heartbreaking cry that the red macaw let out before being cut off by the hawk's blow. When the birds had done their deed they let the body fall down with a massive thud that alerted the monkeys and the other birds nearby.

The shadowy birds watched as their target's intestines spilled onto the ground, letting out puddles upon puddles of blood to seep into the soft greenery of the jungle.

The birds waited, and waited, and waited. . . And when the macaw's carcass didn't turn into the carcass of a dead phoenix, they knew that heir target hadn't been the bird they had been looking for.

Toto seemed to realize this, so he took off into the air and towards the beach alongside with a terrified flock of red beautiful birds.

When he heard even more painfully cut off cries from the birds that had taken him in after Taehyung and Beomgyu's father had run away with the other elementals, it became evident to Toto that the peace at the island had finally been disturbed. . .

"And then we kissed!" Kai squeaked, his arms going into the air excitedly as Yeonjun giggled at the retelling of the youngers' date.

It was nice to know that Kai was starting to act more like the 5-year old he had met all those years ago; lively, happy and filled with curiosity at anything that moved passed him. It felt even better to know that Soobin, someone who had taken interest in Kai from the very beginning, was his suitor as well. Kai was in good hands, that's what made Yeonjun feel at ease.

"It was my first kiss too! Well, the real one. . . y'know?" Kai looked up at Yeonjun with big silvery eyes before letting out a giggle when Yeonjun pulled him onto his lap and ruffled his hair. "I'm glad you two had great time together." He hugged the younger tightly and placed a gentleman kissing on the top of his head.
