Picking up the Pieces

NO MIST

Death has always surrounded Percy Jackson like an embrace, it wasn't uncommon for demigod's to think they know death, to try to control death but things were different for Percy Jackson, death seemed to have a thing for Percy taking nearly everyone in his life and the one person that Percy thought would be in his life forever -- his soulmate -- was cruelly taken from the world

He knew it wasn't Thantos's fault, but it seemed that the fates had taken a special interest in him and honestly he was tired of it. How many times did he have to risk his life to prove himself to the fates and Gods and how many more people were going to be stolen from him before he could navigate his life with them?

Percy didn't know where to start picking up the pieces in order to glue his life together again. It was like he had been broken, shattered pieces of glass lay around him that were his life and he had to somehow piece them back together in the correct way and all the pieces that made him him were either missing or broken because a big part of what made him who he was today was Annabeth

He couldn't feel anything without her, it was as if his emotions had switch themselves off. As much as he wanted to cry, scream and rage. He couldn't find it within himself to do it, at least not externally. Internally there was a tsunami happening, rage and anger built up inside of him crawling around him like worms warping him into something he wasn't. He couldn't feel any emotion right now but he would soon, exploding like a fizzy drink bottle that had been shaken up too much and it wouldn't be pretty

It had only been a few months since her death, but he had completely fallen apart. He couldn't eat or sleep simply he couldn't do much of anything, even though he knew it was wrong and Annabeth would want him to move on with his life. He found himself trapped.

Until one night when he was sleeping, he hadn't been sleeping a lot so any sleep for him was a rarity and he found himself in the middle of a room and he and Annabeth were laughing and joking throwing popcorn at each other and generally just having a good time, Percy felt a ghost of a smile lift up his lips

Then he heard young Annabeth (she couldn't be older than thirteen) say, "Seaweed Brain, you know that I don't pass up on a dare, you shouldn't be surprised that I ate the whole bottle of mayonnaise"

"Still I expected you to get through half the bottle not all of it" The younger Percy pointed out with false disgust but a grin made its way onto his face. It wasn't long before the two of them were laughing again over nothing and Sally Jackson made her way out of her room, wearily trying to rub the sleep out of her eyes

"What's going on here?" Sally drawled, sleep lacing her tone

"Sorry mom" Percy replied sheepishly when he looked at the clock and saw it was five o'clock in the morning and they must have woken his mom up with all the noise but Sally waved Percy off with a small smile and then was about to wander off back to bed when she heard a sniffling sound and immediately spun around to see Annabeth her head buried in her hands trying to conceal the fact that she was crying

"Annabeth? Are you okay?"

"I-I understand i-if you want to send me back to c-camp" Annabeth hiccuped

Sally laughed, the sound like bells and as smooth as honey  "Oh honey, I'm not going to send you home. I know it was just an accident. It happens sometimes, I'm really not mad, just try and get back to sleep"

"We will mom"

"Yes Ms Jackson"

They both said it at the same time and then burst out laughing leaving Sally to roll her eyes but a ghost of a smile on her face as she rubbed her forehead and walked away, happy that Annabeth wasn't crying anymore

Percy snapped out of his dream and sat up with a smile on his face. He remembered that memory. It was when they were thirteen, he Annabeth and Grover had spent the day around New York and then Annabeth came back to his house for a sleepover, they always had sleepovers in the summer between eighth grade and the start of high school and they always played truth or dare, Annabeth being the one to never back down from a dare and Percy never being able to lie to her when he picked truth

He didn't know what it was until she kissed him at Mt St Helens

From then on their hearts beat in tandem and Percy could feel Annabeth's heart beating next to his and she could feel his. From there on out Percy knew he would do anything to protect Annabeth, shame that he couldn't protect him when she needed her

They were twenty they were going to start a family

But before they could Annabeth was ripped from his grasp before he could do anything about it and now he had to live without her. How did Sally learn how to move on from Posedon, when he told her he was a God and had to go back to Olympus, he knew she had fallen into an abusive relationship but that was to protect Percy right? So how when she was no longer tied to Gabe and still hurting over Poisedon how did she move on a start a new life with Paul?

Percy didn't know, but he felt like he should

It was hard for the demigod son of Poisedon, Annabeth was the first girl he loved after all and he would probably always love her. He was just a man trying to pick up the pieces of his life and forget the woman he would've (and still would) give his life for.
