Well, this chapter started out at 1600 words and is now just over 2800 words.  So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hope I didn't get too "wordy" in this update.  Please let me know if I did.  I'm a talker which apparently now translates into my writing as well.  Thank you for reading and I look forward to responding to all your wonderful comments!   Love to all and be safe!

Wei Ying POV:

'Lan Zhan! Look! I killed all the fierce corpses all by myself! I'm stronger now! I don't need you to protect me anymore! Isn't that great? Now I can protect you!' I look through the dense fog and darkness around me, admiring my work with a smile, when my eyes land on my husband. His white robes seem dull from the heavy mist.

'Lan Zhan? Why are you looking at me like that? What's wrong? Didn't I do good. Aren't you proud of your Wei Ying?'

My happiness slowly fades. Why is he not answering me? Why is he just standing there? I thought he would be happy and give me one of his approving smiles but......he's not smiling at all. Why does he look so scared? Not just scared but.......terrified. What did I do wrong?

I turn around to look at the corpses I just slayed and my body freezes. My heart stops beating and shrivels inside my chest. I can't breathe. I can't blink. I can't understand what my eyes are showing me. Who did this? I want to cry but my tears won't come. I call out their names but my voice is mute.

"Sizhui?" My feet drag as I walk over to my son and collapse by his side. His body is broken, a thin streak of blood at the corner of his mouth which is frozen in an eternal scream. I reach out to touch him but he disappears in a cloud of black smoke. I look behind me at another body.

'Jiang Cheng? No." I crawl weakly over to my brother who is lying face down. I pull him over into my arms and realize that he died protecting our Shijie and her innocent baby boy. I scream in horror, my violently shaking hand trying to touch them in hopes that maybe they are still alive. But, before my fingertips reach them, they, too, are consumed by dark smoke that steals them away from me.

'No! No! No! No!' My lips form the word repeatedly but the world around me is deathly silent. My head turns painfully to bear witness to the chaos around me and I see all the dead bodies that litter the hillside. Bodies whose eyes stare directly at me, their light extinguished, their fear etched onto their bloody faces.

I can feel my grief dying in my heart. Anger rises in its place. My blood boils in my veins and my jaw clenches. My eyes combust into a hellish fire as my fingers tighten around Chenqing, pure hatred consuming me.

'I will destroy whoever did this. I will hunt them down and kill them without mercy. I will avenge every one of you ten times over.' My voice now rumbles deep within me. I gently place my brother next to our sister, laying his arm over her and his hand on the baby's chest. I pray I can bring their spirits peace.

'Wei Ying.' I hear my lover's voice call my name. It is filled with pain and sadness. I turn to look at him and see his face contorted in pain. Fresh blood seeps from his chest and soaks his immaculate white robes as he collapses to his knees.

'Lan Zhan!' I rush to his side, hurtling over all the crushed, broken, and twisted bodies that block my path. My arms reach out to stop him from falling forward into the blood-soaked ground. Frantically, I turn him over and gasp when I see his once beautiful jade colored skin cut with deep scarring wounds. I tenderly touch his face, not wanting to cause him any more pain but unable to stop myself. I can see my beloved's life slipping away from me and I pull him closer to place his head on my chest.
