They keep making eye contact across the bar. They've already greeted each other, along with the others, in their usual boisterous way. Now, though, their eyes keep sliding back from opposite ends of the bar as they chat with different friends, ostensibly meant to be networking around drinks.
It started when they kept rolling their eyes at each other, each exceptionally fed up with the whole thing. Then once, when Lisa looked up, Roseanne was just looking at her, then shot her a sweet, shy smile, like she has been caught, turning back to her conversation partners. Lisa felt her cheeks warm, turning back to her own conversation and drink.
The next time it's Lisa watching Roseanne, trying to gauge what would happen. She's half paying attention to the two people around her, and is watching Roseanne over the rim of her glass as she takes a purposefully slow drink. Roseanne is laughing at something, then glances over, right at her, catches her eye, and Lisa swears, her grin gets wider. Her gaze definitely lingers. Lisa grins around the glass and nearly dribbles her drink down her chin. Feels herself go red, but Roseanne has already turned back to her conversation.
It happens a few more times this way, with lingering looks and smiles that Lisa isn't sure what to make of. Watching her, Roseanne seems in her element, working the room, and her smile getting larger with each glance over to her.
Lisa excuses her from her current conversation and heads to the crowded bar, people all up and down it chatting, ordering herself another Jack and Coke, leaning against it to wait. Suddenly she feels someone lean in next to her, closer than she was expecting.
"What're you having?" She turns to see Roseanne, bright and wide grin, looking at her. Lisa tells her and Roseanne orders the same.
"Not having fun, Lisa?" Roseanne is grinning at her and leans in, their arms brushing lightly. Lisa's heartbeat seems to triple. Did Roseanne do that on purpose? She tries laugh her nerves off,
"Not that. Just not really my thing. You seem to be killing it though."
Roseanne shrugs under the praise, "Get used to it I guess." The bartender puts their drinks in front of them. "The drinks help." She gently taps her glass to Lisa's before taking a gulp.
Lisa puts the glass to her mouth and watches Roseanne from the corner of her eye.
"So, what's the plan?" Roseanne has turned back to her and her arm is back gently brushing her and Lisa can't stop analyzing whether it's there intentionally. Lisa quickly looks up at her, and Roseanne is smiling softly.
"Not sure. Don't you need to get back?"
Roseanne shrugs again. "No, it's meant to be networking isn't it? I'm networking." She gestures between them. Lisa laughs and holds up her glass in cheers and tries to ignore the heat she feels in her cheeks. Roseanne salutes her with her glass and they drink in companionable silence a moment.
Lisa can't seem to get her heart rate or blush under control. Roseanne sets her drink down and now her hand is very close to Lisa's resting on the bar top. Lisa swallows loudly around a gulp of her drink.
"Part of me does want to just blow the rest of the night off though," Roseanne is saying, leaning in almost conspiratorially.
Lisa nods, amazed to hear she sounds so calm. "Has been a long day. What would you do instead?"
Roseanne watches her a moment, then laughs a bit loudly, shakes her head. "Oh, I dunno. Get some ice cream on the way back to the hotel? Go to bed?"
