Kuina's eyes widened in horror, and for the first time, she finally understood the full extent of why the elders had decided to annihilate the clan. She finally understood why her parents had always warned her to never stray outside of the clan's territory.

Because the world outside was full of evil people. Because walking into the world outside was no different from walking into a coffin.

A desperation to survive lanced through her as raw tears burned her eyes. "What do you want from me!" She cried out as she shook her arms, the clanking sounds of the chains caused by her struggle echoed within the dungeon.

Kabuto watched her and a laugh stifled out of his throat. "Oh my, why are you crying, Fragrance? It's baffling me," he chuckled, his shoulders trembling. "I've always envisioned the Kaori Clan's members to be wise sages - emotionless and intelligent. That would make my job much easier, but alas, I have to kill a poor little thing like you. Don't you now wish you didn't survive that explosion?"

Kuina clenched her fists, wanting to succumb to her fear, but she shook her head rapidly. "I don't wish for that. He told me I was given the second chance to live, and I will live."

"Oh? Who told you so?"

"Itachi. . ."

Amusement filled Kabuto's face. "And you trust him?"

She blinked down her tears, the thought of Itachi, for some reason, made this hell of a dungeon feel even more barren than it already was. "He'll come and save me," she spoke through clenched teeth. "He won't let you kill me—"

"Ah really?" A cold and hissy voice cut her off.

Kuina looked up to see Orochimaru standing by the door, his eyes piercing right at her.

"How foolish of you to have your hope placed on the likes of Itachi. He wouldn't come, trust me, my dear," Orochimaru spoke before he slowly crept over to where Kuina was chained up.

Kuina couldn't stop shaking beneath his gaze. She tried to back away but the chains restrained her in place. Orochimaru stood before her and stretched his hand out, his slender fingers running across her cheeks and wiping her tears away.

"Don't cry, my dear. I'm simply going to be extracting out your brain, your clan's valuable Kekkei Genkai. I need it from you, so I hope you wouldn't mind," he smiled at her, his cold and repulsive fingers fondled with her skin.

She tried to shake him off, a helpless sob threatening to burst from her lips. "But why? Why does every Shinobi want my useless Kekkei Genkai? Why can't you all just leave me alone?" She breathed, her voice raspy and trembling.

Orochimaru's smile widened, stretching towards his ears. "A power as exotic as the Kaori Clan's is hard to come by. Think about it, my dear, what one came to do with such a power. If I can know the strengths and weaknesses of anyone, if I can grasp the story of everyone's lives, I'll be invincible. You, little thing, probably doesn't utilise your power well, that's why you believe it is useless. But don't worry, you can give it to me, and I'll guarantee such power will not go to waste."

With that, Orochimaru took steps back, his eyes not leaving her. "Well then, Kabuto, let's not idle around and get this done, shall we?"

Kabuto's smirk widened. "Of course, Orochimaru-sama," he said as he averted his gaze to Kuina. His eyes welled up with pretentious pity. "Well then, I'm going to be extracting your brain with my Medical Ninjutsu, and I will be implanting it into Lord Orochimaru's brain. Subsequently, he would gain the exotic ability of the Fragrance."

Kuina cast her gaze down towards the ground, her body lost its strength to struggle.

A twisted smile came over Kabuto's lips as he clapped his hands, signalling the two rogue ninja from before to approach him. He handed them a box with large and sharp metal needles inside before fixing his glasses in place on his nose bridge. "Now then, let us idle no more and proceed before the Akatsuki come and claim you."

Kuina breathed shakily as she glanced around the dungeon for a possible escape. But greeting her from all sides were enclosed concrete walls. There was a small opening that allowed moonlight to seep in, but it was barely large enough for even a head fit through. The chilly air blew into the room, biting against her skin and amplifying her trembling.

Her breath hitched in her throat when the two rogue ninja walked over to her and pulled out the thick and sharp needles. Without warning, she felt them tug against her nightgown, tearing it down to reveal her bare back.

Her fragile hope that someone will save her shattered when she felt the sharp point of the needle grazed against the skin by her nape. Then without any warning, she felt a sharp pain seared through her, her vision filling up with black dots. Her shriek rattled into the night as tears sprung from her eyes.

Hot blood ran down her bare back as the rogue ninja pushed the thick needle deeper into her skin. The iron stench filled her nose as the adrenaline to flee flooded her.

But before she could even bring herself to think of an escape plan, she felt another sharp needle pierced into her back, then another and another. The excruciating pain tore apart her consciousness, and darkness began to swirl into the corners of her eyes, eating away the life in her.

And as she was about to lose consciousness, the corner of her hazy vision caught a sight of a black crow perched by the lattice of the small opening to the outside. Its eyes illuminated red like a Sharingan, and it reminded her so much of him.

She sniffled as she lowered her gaze.

She couldn't say she particularly liked how harsh and mean Itachi was with his words. She also couldn't say whether he would come and save her or not. He had always told her how much he hated her care and she feared he might even hate her existence as a whole; she was after all a burden he never wanted.

But if he would save her from this hell, she promised she would never cry and be an emotional burden ever again. She promised she wouldn't show that she was annoyingly sentimental and sensitive about his well-being ever again. She promised she wouldn't cause any more trouble for him ever again.

Don't make casual promises like that.

His voice rang in her head, stirring a sense of comfort and warmth in her. And for some reason, she felt calm and at peace. She had been given a second chance at life, and she had to come to accept that it would be too miraculous if there were to be a third.

Even though she didn't wish to die right then, she thought it was alright to rest. She blinked down her tears as she closed her eyes and drifted off into a deep sleep.
