Kakashi

Kakashi stood on the tree branch where he had a clear view of the underground Itachi went into. He didn't dare to follow Itachi inside, not knowing what was under there. It would be a heavy risk. Besides, he had his students with him.

It took him a long detour to get around Itachi's Amaterasu, and resting here, waiting for Itachi to come out wasn't too bad.

"When is Sasuke's brother gonna come up? We've been watching the entrance for hours!" Naruto whined as he sat on the branch, crossing his arms. "I thought our mission is to find out where the Fragrance is and capture her, not to stalk that Uchiha freak."

Sakura placed her finger on her lips, angrily shushing Naruto. "Shut up and just follow Kakashi-sensei's instructions, moron."

Naruto grumbled under his breath and turned away from Sakura.

Kakashi sighed as he kept quiet. He was already having an odd feeling about this whole ordeal. From Jiraiya's information, Uchiha Itachi had always been working as a two man's team with Hoshigaki Kisame. But now, he was all alone which raised quite a question. Itachi seemed to also be very hasty and almost anxious, something that he had never shown throughout his years as a young boy in the ruthless battleground of the Anbu. And to make matters even more alarming was that, Kakashi could sense a strong Chakra flow below the ground - Uchiha Itachi's chakra to be exact - but he didn't know what was happening.

After waiting for a long while, at last, Kakashi caught sight of a figure walking out of the underground. He narrowed his eyes as he held his hand up, signalling Naruto and Sakura to be on their guards.

He peered through the darkness and spotted Itachi whose face was engulfed by a cold rage. In his arms was a woman, her face matching the portrait of the Fragrance he was given by the Hokage.

"Hey, look, Kakashi-sensei, isn't that the Fragrance?" Naruto whispered, pointing below. "Let's go seize her!"

Before Naruto could jump down, Kakashi held his hand out, blocking him. His face turned grim. Something didn't feel right. "Let us observe first," he instructed his impulsive student.

Naruto gritted his teeth and let out a frustrated sigh as he retreated back to his spot.

Kakashi watched as the Fragrance tugged on Itachi's clothes, her face covered in pain. "Can you put me down? I want to rest for a bit." He could hear her say.

Itachi said nothing as he placed her down against a tree trunk. She panted hard as she lay back and peered up at Itachi's figure, her eyes brimming with tears. "I-I don't think I can make it back to the hideout."

Itachi's gaze darkened as he crouched down in front of her. "You won't get to decide that."

The Fragrance shook her head. "I'm losing too much blood," she muttered as she looked up at him, her eyes wavering. "Life is born, life dies; is it something you can control?"

His gaze darkened as he turned away from her. "Don't use my saying against me."

The Fragrance forced out a smile through her tears. Hesitantly, she reached out as if to touch his hand, but then she retreated it back and instead she clutched onto the edge of his sleeve, tugging at him. He tensed slightly as he glanced at her hand and then at her smile.

"I'm sorry," she spoke, her voice trembling. "I'm sorry I will be the reason you fail your mission. I really want to help you fulfil your duty, but I don't think I can anymore."

Itachi brought his hand up to wipe the trail of blood off his cheek as he looked at her tiredly. "Why are you speaking like this? Didn't you tell me you have found the incentive to live your life?"

She leaned back against the tree, her face quenching in pain. "Yes, I have found my incentive. I really did. . ." She trailed off and gulped as she looked him in the eyes. "The moment I looked through your life, I wanted to live for you because I know I can change your fate. You probably think I'm silly again, but all this time, you were my incentive."

Itachi's face grew sombre. "So, was that why you were unreasonably mad at me that night? Because I shattered your incentive to live?"

She shook her head rapidly. "I was never mad at you, I was just sad. I also understand you. Me and you, we are not that close to each other. I know I'm not in the place to wish you well, and at this point, I guess I don't really mind dying. After all death is just a fleeting inevitable end."

"Damn it," Itachi muttered under his breath as he ran his hand into his hair, shaking his head. "You can't even care for your own life, yet why do you care so much for me?"

"Because I think what you did in the past was honorable. And I think you deserve to be happy. Even if it is fleeting, I just want you to be happy."

"Do you think I could be happy? I killed everyone I have ever loved. My heart has long been buried with the dead, and my mind has long lost its will to live. And now even you think it is easy to just leave—" he cut himself short and placed his hand over his face, shaking his head. "You're troublesome."

She furrowed her brows at his word before she coughed sickly and slumped back against the tree trunk. A raspy laugh scraped up her throat. "Don't worry, soon, I won't be here to bring you any more trouble." She coughed again, this time, blood spurted out of her lips, staining her hands red. She continued coughing, and Itachi went completely tense.

It wasn't until she let out an agonising grunt that he was snapped from his trance. He quickly helped her to sit up and rubbed his hand against her back in hope of easing her pain. But then he brought his hand to his face, finding it covered in blood. He clenched his jaw as he looked over at her back. Blood was soaking through her flimsy nightgown, bleeding nonstop from the severe stab wounds.

His breathing grew arduous. "Fragrance," he called her, shaking her lightly, but she was barely conscious at that point.

He held onto her, and suddenly, anger flooded his eyes. He snapped his gaze at the underground hideout and suddenly the entire place lit into flames, one that would destroy the whole place and everyone inside.

Then he turned back to her, his anger dissipated. And as Kakashi stood above the tree observing Itachi, he caught a sight of an expression that unnerved him. For he knew the expression very well, so well that his heart ached with pain. There was madness on Itachi's face, but deep within the shield of anger, was something else.

Itachi cradled her gently, lifting her from the ground, and with full speed he left off into the woods. And Kakashi stood there on the tree, watching him disappear into the distance, having no plan to make a move.

"Kakashi-sensei! Are we seriously just gonna let them leave like that?" Naruto yelled, stomping his feet, dissatisfied. "What about our mission? What about capturing that Fragrance!"

"Just . . . Let them go," Kakashi muttered, keeping his gaze at the direction Itachi left off. A strange pain flushed over his heart. Indeed he knew the expression on Itachi's face far too well. It was a fear: fear of losing another thing that they loved because they had lost too many before, and they couldn't bear to lose anymore.
