2014 ― The Bus

"Time's up," Grant said when he marched Skye back into the lab. Audrey was still handcuffed to the stairs, and when Grant left to get Skye, she broke down into sob and was sobbing so loud that Grant could hear her from upstairs. He broke her, and he knew that he broke her, but as he told her, he was hoping she would understand and find it in herself to love him still anyway. "You can tell me where to unlock the drive, or you can tell him," Grant said as he gestured to Mike.

"Grant, leave her alone," Audrey said. She didn't sound angry or upset; she felt like she had nothing left in her. She was completely defeated.

"Mike... Please... I know you don't want to do this." Skye said.

"It's not up to me," Mike said.

"Yes, it is. I don't care what they did to you. You're still Mike Peterson. You're still a father. You have a son." Skye said.

"Who I left in your hands. I asked you to look after him, Skye. Where is he now?" Mike asked.

"He's with his aunt, under the protection of a S.H.I.E.L.D. team," Skye said.

"And what is S.H.I.E.L.D. today? HYDRA can hurt my son anytime they want, and if I get any funny ideas about rescuing him, they push a little button and blow a hole in my skull." Mike said.

"Fitz-Simmons will figure out a way...-" Mike cut her off.

"...-No! There's no way out of this, Skye. Tell us how to unlock the drive," Mike said. Skye looked over at Audrey, who didn't even know what to signal to her. She had nothing left in her, and Skye could see that all over her face.

"No," Skye said.

"Damn it, Skye!" Grant snapped.

"You could've shot Audrey or me back in Italy, but you didn't. They made Quinn shoot her because there's still good in you, Mike. And I don't think you're going to hurt me." Skye said.

"You're right... I won't hurt you." He said, and then he turned around and shot something at Grant, making Audrey stand up as Grant's eyes widened and he fell to the ground.

"No! What did you do!" Audrey yelled.

"I stopped his heart," Mike said.

"His heart..." Audrey said.

"Isn't beating... he's having a heart attack. I can restart it or not. It depends on Skye." Mike said to Audrey. Audrey looked down at Grant, who was gasping for air.

"Rey..." He wheezed out, and Audrey looked at Skye. When Skye saw the tears in Audrey's eyes, she knew she couldn't do it. She couldn't let Grant die in front of Audrey. Grant's betrayal broke her, but she knew if she let Grant die in front of Audrey, that would kill her.

"You think we don't want to watch him suffer?" Skye asked.

"Not just suffer, die. Look at Audrey's face. Do you think she'll forgive you if you let the love of her life die right in front of her? Garrett doesn't think you'll let that happen." Mike said. Skye looked at Audrey, who was still crying with her eyes only on Grant, and then she looked back at Grant, who was still wheezing on the ground.
