THE SUN slowly fell behind the horizon, leaving behind a display of stars, I hated that. The stars. The moon. The sky was always clear in Fresco, you could see into the galaxy for miles as if your eyes were a telescope. But in Lakeland the night sky was faint, lacklustre and faded by pollution.

We had stayed up the mountain for hours just talking. Topics moved onto lighter things like summers at their lake house. He told me about his hardcore grandparents and how he spent a whole year living at the institution.

"We need to go back, they'll send out a search party." His chest vibrated against me with his easygoing laughter.

"My dad right now is probably counting today's pills in the organiser just to make sure I took them." I laughed too, I could imagine Jordan doing that. He stood up and wiped the dirt off his shorts then held his hand out for me. I didn't hesitate to take it.

His hand was warm, and large; enclosing mine completely. I felt safe in his hands. I felt safe with him, period.

Everything became familiar the closer we got to our camp. I could hear the hustle and bustle of students playing soccer on the field and the mingled chatter of people talking around a campfire. As we weaved our way through the pathways everyone greeted Arlo and made small talk. As always they ignored my existence completely.

Our group sat on logs around a campfire, their laughter could be heard before we even approached them. I got nervous flutters in my belly and tried to detach our fingers before getting closer to them but he held me tighter informing me letting go wasn't an option. The laughter dimmed to a stop as soon as they spotted us walking by.

"Oh nice of you to join us Arlo, Fearne. Where the fuck have you two been all day?" Jordan inquired.

"Got lost up the mountain, apparently our chaperones are shit." Arlo snapped back.

"You're not even in the same group." Liam pointed out, throwing a nut shell at Jordan's head. Arlo smirked.

"Okay, so my excuse has flaws, I'll come back when I've thought of something better." He shrugged casually.

In the distance Carlton called him over and he instantly detached our hands to go running across the soccer field towards him. I watched them hug one another before walking off towards one of the cabins.

"And just like that he goes and breaks your heart." Cameron commented as he poked a stick into the naked flames. I narrowed my eyes at him.

"He never had my heart to break." I lied.

"Just as well, you're not gonna get a chance to sneak off tomorrow. We're doing water activities in the lake."

"The lake?" Chills of fear left me cold, even on this warm evening. My rational mind left my body completely, only the darkness remaining, consuming my thoughts.
