When at last she found someone to whom she felt she could pour out her soul, Tomi often stopped in shock at the words she uttered out- they were so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside her so long.
Today was no different. She'd practically fallen the whole set of stairs, scrambling for her mate in total panic. She'd shoved her face in his chest and hadn't let go even when he'd tried to understand what was going on.
She'd rambled on and on, the pain, the stranger, the burning like the venom, the fear. She'd opened herself bare to him, and Edward had listened to everything while cradling her in his car.
It was inconvenient. The car space wasn't exactly luxurious, though it was clearly expensive. The food he'd made for her had went long forgotten on the counter. But it was fine because they were together and she couldn't care to think about anything else but him and their skin singing with delight.
"Tomi," Edward said gently, brainding her hair as she tried to calm her breathing. They'd parked in front of Charlie's house and hadn't made a move to get out for a while now. "He's worried. Thinks you have bad news." Edward couldn't quite read Charlie's thoughts, they were a bit jumbled and a bit confusing, but when the man focused enough on something, Edward could hear bits and pieces of it. At least, it wasn't a deep absent silence like in Bella's head. He despised not knowing, and that just added fuel to the fire of his anger towards his mate's sister.
She sighed, pressing her back into his chest some more. He'd driven like this with her on her legs, and hadn't stopped drying her tears even if he was focused on the road. "I still feel a bit shaken."
"I know." He breathed next to her ear, gently tucking hair behind it. "I'm not letting anything happen to you. I promise."
She squeezed his hand. Maybe he wouldn't. But what would happen when he wasn't there? When she was alone like with James. Like she was in Arizona?
Edward sighed, and she scolded herself internally. He had felt so guilty already for letting James at her, but it had truly not been his fault. If anything, it was Alice's for not telling her family what was really happening.
She shook her head again. Alice had known what she was doing. She was the one who could see the future, after all.
"Come on. Let's get you out of the car." He gently coaxed her out of her thoughts, his voice carefully leveled as he slowly pressed the cap on her head.
