DAYS TURNED to weeks.

Weeks turned to months.

Three months to be exact.

It was like a prison, my life in foster care felt like a million years ago. Arlo just a distant memory of my past. I bet they all moved on with their lives, never gave me a second thought but I still thought about them every single day, just not in the same way anymore.

I no longer dreamt up him rescuing me. I cringed whenever I thought about how tangled up I got in him. What I let him do to me, what I did to him.

Sally's cafe smelt like coffee and ketchup. It wasn't fancy but it was the place the whole town congregated.

I sat flicking the spring napkin holder, waiting for Blue to turn up for another one of our riveting dates. There was a hustle of voices coming from the booth behind mine.

"I said no Peter, we're not doing that again." Peter slammed his fists down on the table and I lowered my head, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear to make it seem like I wasn't listening.

"Are you fucking seriously telling me no Kara? Who the fuck do you think you are? This town rides you like a stolen bicycle and I want my fair share."

"Look, I'm sorry okay. I don't want to do that again. I'm sick of everyone treating me like this. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, I'm sorry." I turned my head to look at them. Peter leaned in close, towering over her intimidatingly. Nobody did anything to stop him because it was Kara and in the towns eyes she deserved it.

"Once a whore, you're nothing more." Peter spat in her face and stormed out of Sally's slamming the door closed behind him. She wiped her cheek with a napkin and then our eyes met.

"What are you looking at bitch?" She snapped.

"You shouldn't ever apologise for saying no." I offered up quietly. Her face softened but the second Blue walked in she rolled her eyes and turned away from us.

"Hey, I'm so sorry I'm late." I stood up as he slipped into the booth and then sat back down. "I got caught up in meditation and lost track of time."

"That's okay, you're here now." He reached over the table and I clasped my hand in his.

This was our ninth date, we were allowed to hold hands in public spaces and side hug.

I hoped by now I would like him more but he was dry and unexciting. He never made me laugh, not once. His manner was wholesome and shy but he had aspirations and would take good care of me.

"How did you get on with your English paper?"

"I aced it, got a big fat A plus." I beamed from ear to ear. I deserved that A plus, I threw everything I had into writing that paper and I was super proud of my accomplishments.
