Stan rushed into the hospital, looking around for any sign of you. He ran to the front desk, his breathing heavy from the amount of sprinting he'd done.

"(Y/n). (Y/n) Barber, please. W-where-" Stan was cut off by a doctor entering the lobby who called out to him.

"You're here for (Y/n) Barber?"

"Yes! A-are they...?"

"They're fine. Just got out of surgery." The doctor replied. Stanley felt the weight come off his entire body, practically collapsing onto the floor from relief but catching himself on the counter. The tears began to sting his eyes as he grabbed the ornate marble, more thankful than he could've expressed with words.

"The shrapnel from the crash impaled their legs and damaged several nerves. Thankfully, we were able to fix enough of the damage to save them. It will take a few months for them to fully recover and a lot of physical therapy, but they will eventually regain feeling and mobility."

"Can I see them?" Stanley asked, looking up to the doctor with pleading eyes. The doctor looked at his chart before nodding.

"You can wait with them in their room but the anesthesia won't wear off for another hour or so." Stan nodded, rushing down the hall to your room. He paused, realizing he didn't know which room you were in. He turned around.

"220." The doctor called out, already knowing what Stan was going to ask.

"Right. Thank you!" He yelled, starting to rush off once again.

You blinked slowly, the bright white lights violating your immediate eyesight. You groaned, feeling a pounding starting in your head. Your mouth and throat were incredibly dry and you felt like you were going to throw up.

"You're awake." A soft and familiar voice called to your right. You turned your head and saw your husband, grasping your hand like his life depended on it.

"H-Hi-" You attempted to speak, but due to how dry your throat was it barely came out.

"Oh, right you must need water. Here!" He grabbed a cup from the food tray and held it to your lips, helping you drink even though you were sure you didn't need that much assistance. The cool liquid ran down your throat and you never thought a simple thing like drinking water could feel so good. You finished the whole cup with ease and he placed it back down.

"Better?" He asked.

"Much." You replied with a smile. You went to adjust yourself but found it quite difficult. Your legs felt like dead weight, and your face paled as you realized that they didn't really feel like anything else.

"S-Stan..." You whispered.

"Oh, it's okay! Your legs are just... temporarily out of service."
"What do you mean 'temporarily out of service'!?" You shouted.

"The nerves in your legs were damaged but they were able to repair most of it. The doctors estimate five months and a lot of physical therapy for a full recovery but the future is not dark! And that's what's important." He replied, holding your hand all the while. You smiled and squeezed his hand.

"What would I do without you?" You asked before kissing his hand. He smiled before wrapping his arms around you.

"I'm so glad you're okay. I don't know what I'd do without you. Now come on, let's get you home." He replied as he pulled the blanket off of you.

"Home? Are you sure I'm cleared?"

"Mmmhm. Already talked to the doctor, all we have to do is sign you out."

"What are you waiting for then? Help your spouse out of bed. My legs are temporarily out of service, aren't they?" You said. He laughed before wrapping his arms around you once again, helping you into the hospital-provided wheelchair.

Stan pushed you toward his bright blue ford and opened the passenger door for you, helping you sit down and shutting it behind you. You watched as he pushed the wheelchair back to the nurse who accompanied you out and frowned. He walked around the car and hopped in the driver's side, starting the car as soon as he was situated.

"What are we gonna do? We don't have a wheelchair back at the apartment." You said as he pulled out of the hospital parking lot.

"Yeah. They're expensive too. Maybe there's somewhere we can rent them for cheap?" He suggested.

"Yeah, maybe. I'll look around online, see what I can find." You said as you grabbed your phone and began your search.

Website after website after website continuously proved to disappoint you. Rentable wheelchairs were hard to come by, always awful quality or way too expensive for what they were offering. And that didn't even begin to scratch the surface of how expensive they were to buy. You felt so helpless, and you didn't even want to fathom how awful this would be for someone who would permanently need a wheelchair.

"Stanley this is hopeless. It's impossible to find one that is even remotely in our price range." You said as he pulled into the parking spot. He stopped the car and sat for a few minutes, thinking about the situation.

"I've got it!" He exclaimed, opening the door and practically jumping out.

"W-what? Stanley!" You called after him, but he was already rushing around the car. He opened the passenger side and placed one arm underneath you and one behind you.

"What are you- Oh!" You explained as he hoisted you out of the car with ease.

"Stanley!" You yelled as he closed the door with his foot. He fumbled with his keys, locking the car after a few seconds of struggling.

"We can't afford a wheelchair, so I'll just have to carry you everywhere."

"Don't be ridiculous Stan. You couldn't possibly."

"Oh but I can! And I will! So you better get used to being royalty for the next few months because this is now your new normal." He replied, beginning the journey to your shared apartment. You blushed deeply and hid your face in his neck.

"This is going to be a long recovery."
