After midnight was the only time to escape. You gripped tightly onto the hand of your lover, running through the forest. The moon was shining its fullest in the sky, as if it hoped its light could guide you to the freedom you desired so much.

"Hurry, Seungmin. We don't have much time before someone notices I'm gone," you urged the boy.

But then he stopped, pulling you back and catching your attention. It was hard to see him in the dark, however, you knew there was something bothering him. Quickly, you pulled down the hood of your cloak.

"We've barely made it halfway out of the sightlines, what's wrong? Do you not want to go anymore?"

Every second felt like a grain of sand was disappearing past an hourglass. There was no time for interruptions.

"I don't mind going, it's just that..." He paused. "Are you ready? You're leaving so many things behind by choosing to run away with me. You're a princess, next in line to the throne. Even if your mom and dad are the queen and king, they're still your parents. Can you leave them? What about the consequences?"

You sighed, knowing he would be worried about the future if you chose this path. Of course, he was only stopping to ask again because he cared about you. He would always be there to make sure you didn't make dumb decisions.

"They may have gave birth to me, but they are nothing close to being parents," you scoffed. "I'm getting married next week. They offered me as a bride to some rich prince. All they care about is the money. If they ever thought about how I felt, then maybe I'd have considered loving them. They don't accept me, or my love for you, just because you're a village boy and not someone of high status and wealth. I know what I want. I want the freedom to love who I want, not for what they can offer in gold, but for the gold they have in their heart, and that person is no one else except you."

Seungmin stepped towards you and cupped your cheek. He caressed it lovingly with the brush of a gentle thumb.

"And then what? You'll become known as the runaway princess. Wanted posters will be hung up and the queen and king won't stop searching for you. You'll lose everything; your royal status, the citizens respect, education from your tutors, luxurious gifts, and all your current belongings. There won't be anything left," his voice softened.

You put your hand over his that was still on your cheek and looked into his eyes with the most confidence you've had in ages.

"If there's nothing left, I have you."

He scanned your expression one more time before chuckling.

"Why, of course. You can be sure that no matter how bad the situation gets, you'll always have me." He touched his forehead with yours, closing his eyes calmly.

There was peace for a moment. Royalty, statuses, wealth, marriages, rules—none of it existed within the few seconds of his touch. Only you and him were able to move in this space. If that was how life worked currently, then things would be so much easier.

"That makes me really happy. Now, we must leave this kingdom before sunrise. If we don't make it out of these woods by then or if we need a place to rest, I know a cabin hidden from–"

Your voice cut off when thumping of footsteps had grew close. Shouting of royal knights were heard not so far away, and your heart began to pound violently.

You pulled your hood back on and grabbed his hand in fear. There was no point in hiding now, they would find you both within a matter of time. That left one other option.

"Run," you whispered.

The noises kept on chasing from behind. They had spotted you.

Curses.
