WHEN WE WALK into biology class, there's a new teacher standing at the front reading through what looks like a printed-out agenda. When she hears sound, she looks up at us, her blue eyes vibrantly complimenting her rosy cheeks that have taken up despite the heated room.
"Come in everyone, take your seats." She welcomes with a warm smile as she brushes her wavy dark blonde hair out of her face. We all file in the room searching for the desk furthest from the front. I take a seat at the back with Sage.
"I'll be your new biology teacher for the rest of the term, until Ms Raye comes back from having her baby. So, we'll just have a few weeks together, maybe even months." I'm not too sad by the news Ms. Raye was always a bit cranky, and I'm not even talking about when she got pregnant.
The new teacher scans the room, getting a clear look of all the students. "Now, from what I've heard we have some new students with us and because we only have a single period right now, I thought what better to do than get to know each other."
I look down at my books with relief, I haven't done any of the work that we were supposed to, so I've been bracing myself for Ms Raye to yell at me or something.
I have a good excuse though, managing four different couples without making anything seem too obvious is not as effortless as it sounds. Especially when four of the eight are boys.
"Why'd you become a biology teacher?" I zone in as the first question is asked, by one of the newer girls in the front row...Billie? I'm pretty sure, we share another class together.
The new teacher smiles, "It's odd, but I loved the water when I was growing up and I still do now, I got injured years back though. Probably before you guys were even born. But anyways, my love for the water eventually converted into my love for marine animals and then terrestrial animals and now I love the entire aspect of Biology."
"You look so young though?" Someone adds, probably hinting towards the whole 'before you guys were born anyways,' aspect of her answer.
She smiles. "Well, I'll be sure to not let that get to my head...too late."
The new teacher answers a few more questions before Azriel raises his hand. "Ms, sorry, I didn't catch your name?" He asks from the desk beside me, where he's seated with Ahmed.
"Oh, right, sorry about that." She walks to the board and in big letters writes her name with a blue whiteboard marker.
MS D'ARC
"Now, it's not pronounced 'dark' like when the lights go out but..." Ms D'arc pauses mid sentence as she takes a seat.
"Like Joan of Arc with a D?" Sage asks.
She turns around to him, with a soft smile. "Yes, exactly. Anyways, I obviously have to mark the role so please correct me if I get anyone's name wrong, seriously nothing is worse than having to be told when I've finished my placement, I've been butchering your lovely names."
