WHEN MARIMBA RHYTMS start to play

"Where were you?" I ask Sage, finding my way to him whilst the entirety of the year level intently watch Salem and Caleb dance on the floor.

The Sterling kids are more interested than the rest of us. After all, with the way people talk about them and their "whirlwind romance" you'd assume Valè was this big bad villain who'd homewrecked.

But then, when they talk about Caleb and Valè's relationship it's very sweet and intimate.

It's all so very confusing, and for once in my life I don't feel the need to get involved in that mess.

Dance with me, make me sway.

"By the way, your girlfriend is staring at me really creepily," I say, deliberately avoiding her direct gaze. From the intensity of her stare in my peripheral vision, I can already tell I'm fucked.

Sage swivels his head to the side, the sharp white of his suit contrasting vividly with the deep, inky hues of the setting. Across the room, Amber stands by the drink table, her gaze a fierce, unyielding spotlight trained on him and me.

The cheeky fucker is smiling when he turns back around. "Nah, that's her happy face." He speaks, oddly fondly. As if he's enjoying their whole cat-and-mouse game.

I raise an eyebrow, a skeptical arch that clearly signals my disbelief. "Really?" That's her smile? Amber's emotional range seems restricted to a narrow spectrum of annoyance, irritation, and skepticism, and I barely know how to decipher between those.

"No." He shakes his head, his wavy dark blonde hair catching the light as he does. A small, mischievous smile plays on his lips. "Also we went out for a walk since it was getting a little...crazy in here."

Bend with me, away with ease

He can say that again. At one point, I really did think Valè's vertebrae had shattered, but that had just been the sound of the glass breaking beneath her. Some of the teachers, acting as chaperones, have stationed themselves around the table, seemingly to protect students from stepping on any stray glass shards. However, it's clear they're really trying to avoid Principal Aveyard's heated wrath.

The music picks up and my eyes quickly flicker over to the two on the dance floor. They're both crowned. Something Caleb has said makes Salem smile brightly and she tries to press up against him.

When we sway, I go weak.

I scan the crowd at that, catching Valè's intent gaze. She's standing in the midst of the festivities, someone's suit jacket wrapped around her. I know I could tell who's jacket if I looked around more, but my eyes are stuck on her face, that's a flawless mask of calm. Despite the serene facade, I can almost feel the undercurrent of pain in her eyes as she watches Caleb and Salem.
