I SEE WHAT Caleb saw in Valé Asters or still see's, boys' emotions are too all over the place for me. Even now as we walk Mayo, she's got his leash in her hands and throws her head back laughing at something I say.
"Scout I'm never going to forgive you, why'd you keep her from me?" She asks, humour in her eyes as we both look over to Scout who's still shaken up from the events of yesterday. Lo being hospitalised and all.
To be honest I could give two shits about Lo, he's a horrible person and whatever reason Caleb punched him - which rumours have been spiralling from - is probably a good enough one, but I do care about Scout and seeing her like this makes me wish he hadn't.
"Do you think they'll me visit now?" She asks, looking back up at us. "It's almost been twenty-four hours and I feel so bad for him."
I look over at Valé who looks conflicted if anything. She bites her bottom lip stopping herself from saying what I'm assuming she wish she could. I'm guessing her thoughts are similar to mine.
Scout suddenly bursts into tears, and I move to her swiftly. "I don't know why Caleb would do that to him, Lo doesn't deserve that!" She cries, she's been a mess the entire day. I don't know I thought why moving her out from where we'd all been in my dorm was a good idea. I just thought, maybe if she'd gotten air and cleared her head she'd become less anxious.
"Maybe it made sense in Caleb's head. Maybe he thought he was doing the right thing." I try and explain, Scout doesn't like when I lie to her, but I don't want to be terribly blunt to her either.
"By hitting Lo?" She asks as I move us to one of the tables, so she doesn't fall onto the floor from complete exhaustion if she has another break down. She takes a seat and Valé ties Mayo's leash to the pole near us. "Valé, what do you think?"
The other girl stills before turning to face the both of us. "As your friend or honestly?" She asks moving up from the ground and taking a seat next to Scout at the table.
"As my friend." Scout settles with.
"Lo didn't deserve it, and whoever put him through it is vile." I pick up on the fact she doesn't use Caleb's name when talking ill of him.
"And honestly?"
"I don't think Lo shows you the side of himself he really is to others. Caleb doesn't have anger issues or anything, he wouldn't strike him just to strike him."
"I think I prefer friend you over rational you." Scout sniffs and Valé breaks out into a soft smile.
"I know, but I wouldn't lie about this."
"Why didn't you stop him? When you saw him on top of him Valé, you did nothing. You just talked to Caleb like he wasn't fighting someone. Like someone wasn't bleeding underneath him. You could've done something."
A look a lot like sadness crosses Valé. "I'm sorry Scout, but I couldn't do that. I can't stop Caleb with what he does, not anymore. He hates me."
"Obviously not enough if he took you back to your room." Scout fires back. My eyes instantly catch onto Valé, unable to feign naivety since just about everyone had read the Instagram post the Sterling's old expose account had posted.
