—~~••~~—"Before, I could summon a Fire Dragon at will. But ever since Morro took over Lloyd and our powers vanished, I haven't felt—Aagh!" A sudden scream broke through the stillness, unmistakably Kai's voice.
I followed the sound, my steps calm and deliberate, savoring the tension in the air. As I rounded the corner, I saw them: the ninja, standing together, their postures tense and uncertain.
"Y/n!" Cole's face lit up with relief as he started toward me, but Kai threw out an arm, halting him.
"We don't know if she's back," Kai said sharply, his gaze fixed on me like I was a lit fuse ready to blow.
I stopped, tilting my head with a smirk playing on my lips. "And if I wasn't, what would you do about it, ninja?" My voice was smooth, taunting, as I began to circle them slowly, my eyes scanning each of their faces. "Would you fight me? Try to bring me back? Or would you run like cowards?"
Jay swallowed hard, his nervousness obvious as he glanced around, his voice breaking the tension. "We're, uh... we're looking for Ronin," he said, trying to steer the conversation back to their mission.
I stopped in front of him, locking eyes as my smirk deepened. "Morro's here too," I said simply, my tone calm yet foreboding. "He's looking for Ronin as well."
Jay's face paled, and he stepped back instinctively. I took a step forward, looming just enough to keep him uncomfortable. "How... unfortunate for you," I added, letting the words hang ominously in the air.
Kai bristled at my tone, stepping up beside Jay. "Unfortunate for us?" he snapped. "You're the one helping Morro! Do you even realize what you're doing?"
I turned my gaze to him, my smirk faltering just slightly as I met his fiery stare. "I know exactly what I'm doing," I shot back. "Unlike you, I'm not fumbling around in the dark, hoping for a miracle."
"Fumbling?!" Kai's fists clenched, his voice rising with frustration. "We're trying to save Lloyd! What are you doing? Playing sidekick to a ghost?!"
I scoffed, crossing my arms. "Sidekick? Please. If anything, Morro needs me more than I need him. At least I'm not wasting my time chasing after a thief."
Cole stepped between us, his hands raised in a calming gesture. "Both of you, stop," he said firmly, his voice cutting through the heated tension. His tone was steady, commanding enough to make both Kai and me pause. "We're all trying to figure this out, so fighting isn't going to help."
Kai's glare didn't falter as he reluctantly took a step back, though his frustration was still clear in the way his fists clenched. "Fine," he bit out, his voice low and seething. "But don't think for a second I trust her."
I tilted my head at Kai, a smug smile tugging at my lips. "Good," I said with mock sweetness. "Trust isn't something I'm after."
Turning to the group, I crossed my arms and let my smile soften just slightly. "I want to talk to Cole. Alone." My words hung in the air, deliberate and unwavering. My gaze locked onto Cole's, and the hardness in his expression melted into something gentler, more unsure.
Cole hesitated for only a second, his brown eyes studying me carefully. Then he nodded, his voice quiet but resolute. "Okay. I'll hear her out."
Zane immediately stepped forward, his calm demeanor laced with concern. "Cole, that is not a wise decision. Y/n has displayed unpredictable behavior. It is not safe."
