—~~••~~—"Ugh, my head hurts," I muttered, pressing my fingers to my temple as a dull ache throbbed beneath my skull. The events of the day had left me rattled, and the pain wasn't helping my mood.
Morro didn't even glance up from the scroll of Airjitzu he was meticulously scanning. "Well, that's nice," he replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "The fire ninja did manage to land a decent blow on you. Congratulations on surviving."
I shot him a sharp glare, though I couldn't argue with the truth of his words. "At least we got away," I said, letting my hand drop from my head. My voice took on a smug edge as I added, "And now we're two steps ahead. It'll take a miracle for those clowns to figure out Airjitzu without the scroll."
Morro's lips curved into a faint smirk, his green eyes glinting with something between amusement and disdain. "A miracle, indeed," he muttered, tracing the scroll with his fingers. "And as far as I can see, they're fresh out of those."
I leaned against the nearest surface, crossing my arms as I watched him. "Still," I began, my voice tinged with irritation, "Kai's aim is getting annoyingly good. Maybe next time you can take a hit for me?"
Morro finally glanced up, his smirk widening. "Oh, poor Y/n. You're saying you can't handle a little fire? Aren't you supposed to be the one with the edge now?"
"Keep talking, ghost boy," I shot back, my eyes narrowing. "At least I don't have to hitch a ride on someone else's body to get things done."
Morro chuckled, the sound low and mocking. "Fair enough," he said, holding up the scroll. "But let's focus on what matters—this scroll puts us leagues ahead of them. With it, we're unstoppable."
I exhaled, the ache in my head subsiding slightly as a smirk crept onto my face. "Unstoppable sounds good to me. Let's see if the ninja can keep up this time."
Morro's smirk widened at my words as he rolled up the scroll with an air of finality. "Exactly. While they're scrambling like headless chickens trying to figure out what we already know, we'll be on our way to the next clue."
I raised an eyebrow, my curiosity piqued despite the throbbing in my head. "So, is the next step?, oh fearless leader?"
Morro leaned back slightly, his eerie aura flickering like a ghostly flame. "We let them squirm a little longer," he said, his tone calm but cold. "The longer they chase shadows, the less time they'll have to regroup. Meanwhile, we strengthen our position."
"Strengthen it how?" I pressed, crossing my arms and narrowing my eyes. "We've got a scroll and some debt leverage, but that won't hold them off forever."
He turned to me, his expression as calculating as ever. "By ensuring they don't learn Airjitzu, for starters. I'll make sure Soul Archer puts enough pressure on Ronin to keep him quiet. And if that doesn't work..." His grin grew sharper. "Well, we can always resort to more direct methods."
I let out a dry laugh, shaking my head. "Your confidence is almost entertaining, Morro. You think they won't find a way, but you know how annoyingly resourceful they can be."
"They won't," he said firmly, his voice dropping into an icy resolve. "Not this time. Not without the scroll."
I paced the room, the floorboards creaking softly beneath my boots as I considered the situation. "You underestimate them. I wouldn't. They're stubborn, and desperate people do crazy things. Besides..." I paused, tilting my head as I gave him a sly smile. "Don't you want them to come after us? Wouldn't it be more fun to crush them face to face?"
