- You peeked out from the darkened supply closet. Matt nodded to you, signaling that it was alright to come out. "Why did you make me hide in there?" You complained, walking out gingerly. The soldier that had come down the hall had disappeared into a room. "Did you want me to make you climb onto the ceiling?" Matt asked sarcastically. You snorted. "It probably wouldn't have smelled like a moldy mop."
"Whatever, c'mon," he raced down the hall. You struggled to keep up with him. Why was this guy so fast? "Here!" Matt halted at a very suspicious metal door with a pad on it. You blinked. Does Matt know the password to this thing? You glanced at him. He was punching numbers into the pad, and the door clicked and slowly opened. Steam hissed and exited the room.
"Um, where do they have Tom?" You asked, suppressing the urge to turn and run for the hills. "They're..." He trailed off and stared at you thoughtfully. "They're what?" You demanded, hesitantly opening the door. "They're experimenting on him," Matt said begrudgingly. You whipped around. "They're doing what?!" You snapped.
"Just let me go in first," he insisted, nudging you away gently. You watched him with wide eyes. What exactly were they doing to Tom? He walked down the foggy stairs and disappeared. You hesitantly followed him, shutting the door behind you. You couldn't see anything. When you got to the bottom of the stairs you could see a bright light through the mist.
"Tom, there's someone here to see you," you heard Matt say. Your heart skipped several beats, and you suddenly felt very lightheaded. "T-Tom?" You approached the sound of Matt's voice until you reached the light. You froze mid-step. Tom was crouching down in a weird tube thing with steam being pumped into it. His face was twisted in pain.
He was wearing a torn uniform similar to Matt's and he had an odd glowing eye mask. His head rose slightly. You couldn't tell if he was looking at you, but then the weird eye things focused on you. He instantly shot up and slammed himself against the glass. "Y/N?!" He winced and collapsed again. "Tom!" You scampered up to the glass.
"A-Are you alright?" You pressed your hand against it. "I'm just swell, thanks," he snorted, holding his stomach. Gee, nice to know he didn't lose any of his sarcasm. "What's- What're they doing to you?" You asked him, gazing over your shoulder at Matt. His expression was blank. Tom hesitated. "I don't know," he answered, looking away. He's lying.
You looked around. The room was completely dark, but you thought you spotted a desk in the other side of the room. You wandered over to it and fanned some mist away. There was a blueprint on the desk. You picked it up and walked back over to the light to get a better view of it. It was the same blueprint you had seen in Tord's office.
The monster. Why would this blueprint be here? You looked up at Tom. He was staring at you, his breathing looking a little choppy, but he was on his feet. You looked back down at the blueprint. There were zero similarities (surprising), but you couldn't think of another reason as to why this would be down here. "Tom," you stared at the blueprint intently.
"Does this look familiar?" You showed it to him. He flinched. "No," he responded quickly. "Tom," you narrowed your eyes. "I can't help you if you don't tell me the truth." His expression softened instantly. "You can't help me at all, Y/N." He stared at you before collapsing for a second time and staring at the floor. "You can't help me at all," he repeated in a whisper.
"Tom..." You crouched down to console him, but he scooted to the other side of the tube. "Just... Just leave. I'm a walking hazard," he muttered. "I don't care if you're a walking hazard!" You snapped. "I love you!" He blinked and looked up at you. "I-" He froze. "Someone's coming." Matt perked up from where he was idly standing.
"What?" You asked. "Y/N, someone's coming! Hide!" Tom repeated frantically. "Hide?! Hide where?!" You whisper-shouted, alarm flooding out of you. The door hissed open nearby. Tom stared at you and Matt, teeth clenched in a shared feeling of alarm.
"Tom," you stared at the man who had entered. He was inspecting Tom with a blank expression. "Hi, Paul," Tom greeted, steadying his breathing. "Come to make my life shittier?" Paul rolled his eyes. "I'm not the one making your life shit," he walked up to the tube and crouched to adjust the pipe that was pumping steam around Tom.
You wanted to throw up. Your boyfriend was a fucken superhero. He was making you and Matt float. How? God knows. But it was very convenient for you and your ginger friend. This birdseye view was making you a little dizzy. "Tord sent me to check up on you," Paul explained, standing up and brushing himself off.
"Why didn't he come down himself?" Tom asked, cocking his head sideways. "He has more important matters," Paul answered, his voice hardening. "Yeah, right," Tom leaned his head back and closed his eyes. "This is what's best for you," Paul said after a moment of complete quiet. That set Tom off. He staggered to his feet and over to the edge of the glass.
"What's best for me? What does Tord know about what's best for me? He doesn't know what's best for anybody!" Tom spat. "I am the last person he knows what's best for!" He jabbed his index finger at Paul. "He wants it for himself! He wants to take over the damn world!" He added. What's it? You stared at Tom, confused now.
Paul held up his hands, warning him to calm down. "Tom, if you don't get the demon extracted, you could spiral out of control. You could hurt people you care about." He narrowed his eyes at him. "You could hurt Y/N," he added. Tom halted. "What do you care about me hurting people I like?" He asked slowly, avoiding Paul's previous statement.
"You're on his side. You don't care what happens to them." Tom walked back to his original spot and sat down. "You got what you came for. I'm fine, I'm still here." Paul looked furious. He whirled around and disappeared into the mist. You heard the door close. A couple of seconds after, you and Matt splattered onto the floor.
"Tom..." You stared at him. He was tired. "I'm gonna get you out of here, okay?" You walked over to his side of the glass and pressed your hand against it. "How?" He asked. "I don't know yet, but I promise. I'll get you out." He slowly pressed his hand against the glass as well. "I love you, too," he mumbled, staring at you. "Let's get outta here," Matt said.
His voice was thick. You and Tom both looked at him. He was welling up with tears. "Matt?!" You rushed over to him. "That... That was so emotional," he sobbed. Tom scoffed. "Go back to work, Gingerbread." You and Matt started for the exit. You stopped at the stairs and turned to look at Tom. He was gazing at you. You smiled at him before leaving.
I'm gonna get you out, Tom. I promised. -
